post-natal bleeding and large clots

Hello
had my baby almost 5 weeks ago and I am still bleeding quite alot. I have had four episodes where I have had a subsantial gush of blood, soaking through the maternity pad. One of these continued with about an hour of heavy bleeding (literally dripping). During these have passed several large blood clots one of which was about 10cm long.

Doctor recommended I took Tranexamic acid tablets to stop bleeding, which i haven't done as i know you can bleed for a few months after birth. It is just the gushes and clots I am concerned about, there is no pain at all though.

Wonder if anyone has experienced the same thing or has any advice about what it could be or what to do about it. THanks for any help anyone can give me

i had a big clot about the same size about two weeks after the birth. i had cramps before i lost it and midwive wasn't worried.

its not unusual to pass clots just after the birth but as its a few weeks i would go back to your gp as you may have retained some membranes, this happened to me and i was given tablets to help my womb contract and pass them out.

I had some rater large clots after DD2 and was worried as the placenta had been a bugger to get out.
Even more horrid was th emw asking me to size them. as i made a gestiure with my hands, she asked me to liken thme to fruit sizes, was it the size of a plum, or an orange...nice.
But no, she wasnt worried about it as there was no pain.

With my first pregnancy, I passed lots of large clots, sometimes in week 5 like you. However, I also had hot and cold flushes to go with it (at one point was sat with the central heating on full blast and a duvet wrapped around me and I was still cold!). Was readmitted to hospital with an infection but was out the next day after antibiotics.

If you don't have any pain, IMHO there is nothing to worry about. Are you overdoing things? Try to rest as much as you can and put your feet up (yes, I know it's hard but I found this helped!)

Hi
It is not normal to bleed heavily 5 weeks postnatally.Does the loss smell offensive or do you feel unwell yourself-temp ect.Whatever you do need a swab taking so i would say see your gp.He may even send you for a scan depending on the amount you are bleeding and have a blood test because you may be iron deficient now.A swab will confirm whether or not you do have an infection, and if so what antibiotic=ic the bug is sensitive too.
Some bfeeding mums can bleed for quite a while, but it shouldnt be red still and heavy or have any clots.
Hope it gets sorted soon

I bled heavily after 1st baby for 7 weeks and passed quite a few clots. Was sent for a scan as the bleeding subsided so nothing untoward was seen..
goodluck, I'm sure all will be fine
