Nahh I reckon as soon as the course is finished.

JARM · 10/01/2007 16:23

i would allow at least 6 hours after last dose

BonyM · 10/01/2007 16:25

All that alcohol will do is make the drug last longer (metabolises more slowly).

So, JARM is probably about right.

Blandmum · 10/01/2007 16:31

which antibiotic are you on? You don't have to avoid alcohol with all of them.

SaintGeorge · 10/01/2007 16:33

Very true mb. I still recall the classic Christmas holiday when DH painfully avoided all alcohol and drank milk instead. Only to be told afterwards that alcohol was fine but he should have avoided dairy products.

Strangely, he didn't find it as amusing as I did

Biglips · 10/01/2007 16:35

it is Co-Amoxiclav tabs contains Penicillin

Pmsl I don't know why but that reminds me of when my dp cut off his lovingly grown long hair for his first serious job interview (I was pleased prefer it short) only to find that the Director interviewing him had long hair.

That was a really tenuous link wasn't it?

SaintGeorge · 10/01/2007 16:39

Very tenious but still very funny

WigWamBam · 10/01/2007 16:40

I just googled, and the patient information says you can have alcohol while you're taking them.

Dp is winding you up

ledodgy · 10/01/2007 16:40

I've been sitting here thinking why on earth did I post that! I have one of those minds that quickly flits from one thing to another usually I keep that in check on here!

Blandmum · 10/01/2007 16:42

If it only contained penicilin, an no other atibiotic, or active ingredient, there is no need to avoid alcohol. The ones I can find listed in my Stockly's Drug interactions, granted now a little out of date are cephelosporins, griseofulvin and possibly doxycycline and erythromycin.

I can't find anything listed that sugests it will take the drugs longer to clear from the system, there is one paper that suggests that it might clear the drugs faster, but not penicillin

roseylea · 10/01/2007 16:44

I'm on Amoxycillin. Do you know if I have to avoid alcohol wit hthem? (not that i feel much like drinking atm...)

SaintGeorge · 10/01/2007 16:45

Yep, fine with alcohol in moderation.

It is the trycyclics that you can't have dairy with.

Metronidazole is the one that causes big problems if you drink whilst on it.

Biglips · 10/01/2007 16:45

well actually im taking 3 X 125mg tabs per day for a week

OP posts:
Blandmum · 10/01/2007 16:48

no prob with amoxycillin other than they can bothe irritate the stomack (drug and alcohol) so watch out for that.

Tricyclics should not be taken along side alcohol.....but they are ads not antibiotics.

Very few Antibiotics are contraindicated with alcohol. Those that are will have it printed on the patient info leaflet that they come with

roseylea · 10/01/2007 16:51

THanks! Yes, I checked the patient info leaflet. I've had a stinking cold since November so the doc has finally given me some amoxycillin with the caveat that it prob won't work anyway!

Oh well...

SaintGeorge · 10/01/2007 16:53

I'm not thinking straight, I meant tetracyclines

Blandmum · 10/01/2007 16:54

no antibiotic will work on a cold, colds are caused by viruses and no antibiotics kill viruses, they only kill bacteria. Unless you have a secondary, bacterial infection, like an infected throat or sinuses, or chest infection, the antibiotic will not do anything for you.

roseylea · 10/01/2007 17:00

Hmm...there's been a horrible bug going round here for ages (dh and the dcs had it in Nov, I caught it from them). I'm not sure if it has developed into an infection. I'm a little paranoid as I had a very bad puemonia last yr...

you seem to know what you're talking about MB! Is someone who's had pneumonia once more likely to get it agin than anyone else? I've been innoculated against the main type of pnemonia bug but the one I had before was an unusual and antibiotic resistent strain. Have you got any idea?

Blandmum · 10/01/2007 17:04

Don't know the answer to your last question. I wouldn't have thought so, since it is an infectious disease. Theoretically you may still have antibodies to help to fight off the bacteria. On the other hand you may have been left in a somewhat weakened state after one illness, leaving you more prone to later illnesses.

Sorry to be vague, but I'm not a Doctor.....I reained as a biochemist and worked for many years as a medical info officer in a pharmaceutical company

roseylea · 10/01/2007 17:13

Thanks for that MB. I have been reading your other threads about your dh - platitudes can sound a bit empty really but I hope that he is as well as he can be for as long as possible.
