fibroids

I have recently found out that I have a large fibroid and probably a few smaller ones in my womb. It looks as though they are growing reasonably quickly as there was no sign of them in the scans I had when I was pregnant in 2004. I'm worried that it might turn out to be cancer and am looking for reassurance really. Has anyone had any experience of fibroids? Did you worry that it might be cancer too? What was the treatment you were given? I'm seeing a gynaecologist next week.

yes nowheregirl i too had fibroids and thelargest was apparently the size of a grapefruit ! along side several smaller ones,i actually ended up havin a hysterectomy but i thikthat there is an operation where they can just remove the fibroids. From what i believe these are not cancerous growths at all. hope this helps

I took was told I had a big fibroid when I went for my smear/well woman check when DS was about 2 years old. When I had another check about five years ago they never mentioned the fibroid, so I asked, and the nurse said it seemed to have shrivelled away of its own accord... apparently they often do.

sorry to answer theother part of your question ,yes i did worry bevause my gp told me when he first examined me that i had either a large cyst or a tumour ! ultimatley though when i went for a scan ( had to drink 3 pints of water first ) they put my mind at rest straight away and said there was nothing i had to worry about from the path lab,but yes i was very very worried. If your gp has said you have fibroids then hats probably what i is so try not to worry too much.all the best wouldlke to know how you get on

yes if you do have fibroids and you are near to going into the menapause they do tend to shrivel, the only thing is that i had been taking hrt for quite a while and the eostrogen in the tabs actually made them grow !

Thanks so much for replying Very reassuring. I saw the gynaecologist on Monday and he confirmed that I had two fibroids - one 8 cm long - and that I should have a hysterectomy. The waiting list for the op is six months which I'm quite happy about as I am not ready to go through with it yet. I don't have any problems with losing my fertility - I have two boys and at 43 wouldn't like another one - but I really don't fancy such a big operation. I'm not so worried about it being cancer now though although there is still a bit of a question mark because the fibroids do seem to be growing quickly. I should get some results back soon which will confirm if they have grown quickly or not so should know more then.

dont worry abot the hysterectomy,i was the worlds worst before i went in ,in fact to tell you the truth when my visitors went the evening before the op ,i decided i wasnt staying and was gonna get my bag and go home ! but i didnt and quite honestly after i had my pre med ,i went to sleep and they actually had to wake me to tell me they were taking me to theatre now ,next thing i knew it was 5.20 pm and i woke up in my bed ,i had no painkilers the whole time i was in and was home in 5 days,so, please dont worry yourself it will all be fine, honestly, one of the worst things was my husband doing the washing and folding up wet bedsheets into a square to hang on the line " to save him time later " i couldnt do anything butlook at them cause i wasnt allowed for a few days .!

Thanks Mummylin. It's really good to read stories like yours. I've spoken to a few women since - it's surprising how many have had a hysterectomy and they have all said they are so glad they had it done because they felt so much better afterwards. I am already fed up with feeling uncomfortable so it looks as though I'll go through with it
