Bit worried about dd(6)-period type pains???

My Dd will be 7 in March, she has for the past 3 months been monitored by our Gp due to precocious puberty, and has an appointment at the hospital next week to see a consultant.
I have kept a record-my Gp requested that I do so ,for the consultant.
Her symptoms so far have been painful, puffy breasts-they are starting to grow, and emotional upsets which Gp says is a form of PMT.
Over the last 2 months(every 28 days exactly) shes also had headaches and diarhorrea. My Gp wont prescribe anything for her as he'd rather wait for the hospital consultant to deal with it.
This month however her PMT-like symptoms have rocketed, shes been incredibly tearful, had the headaches and got some spots come up on her face(acne). But the most concerning thing is shes been complaining of aches low down in her abdomen and theyre cramplike.
I just wondered if any mums out there with daughters that have started their periods noticed they complained of period like pains before they actually started bleeding? She has had a discharge(sorry tmi) but Gp says thats all part of the puberty(she has had it checked)

Sorry its so long but just worried for my little girl

I didn't have precocious puberty but I started my periods at 9, and my breasts were starting to develop by then. I can remember my mother taking me to the GP when I was about 8 because I was getting abdominal pains and cramps every month - I didn't know what it was at the time, but hindsight and a later look at my records make me believe it was the onset of period pains. It's a long while ago now but from memory I guess I had the pain for about 8 - 9 months, maybe a little less, before I actually started my periods. I also started getting a bit of clear discharge, which again from memory I'd say started at around the same time as the pain.

I hope that your appointment with the consultant can ease your worries a little - it's hard to see such a young child going through something like this.

Wish I had some helpful advice but I'm afraid I had no idea girls could experience the onset of puberty at 6. Mine is 6 too and she is such a little girl still. That sounds awful and it's awful to just stand by and not be able to help, isn't it?

I remember how incredibly painful my first period was, nothing would have helped I don't think - but I was 14 which makes a huge difference.

Can you not give her something for the headaches and maybe something gentle like camomile tea (can't harm although it may not help at all)? How about getting plenty of fresh air, going for long walks? They always say that physical exercise helps most with those cramps.

Feel for you

Thank you for the replies...it is very hard to get your head around the fact that shes entering puberty I remember it was hard enough to understand at 11 (when I started) so I can't begin to imagine how a 6 year old must feel.

I've been giving her ibruprofen for the aches and she's been going to bed cuddling a hot water bottle, which has helped abit.
I am pretty sure(gut instinct) that it is a period pain....just wish the hospital appointment was today not next Tuesday

Well if she has painful breasts and they are already visibly developping, it does sound like puberty.

Hope the hospital can help with this.

I have noticed that dd has often complained of lower stomach pain. It does seem to come in regular bouts and it's obviously very painful, yet has no obvious cause such as constipation, stomach virus, etc. I will start monitoring when exactly it happens.

What did your gp have to say about this? Why would she be developping breasts at such an early age?

theflumpsmum · 09/01/2007 11:57

My Gp is pretty sure she's going through early puberty,he cannot confirm it 100% so has referred us to the hospital to see a paediatric consultant.
Apparently they do a series of blood tests,an x-ray of her hand to determine bone age against birth age and if needed an MRI(to rule out the slim chance of a tumour).
As you can see I have been doing my research lol,so I do know what's happening but its just the period type pains this month that threw me.Its been a good while since I started mine so couldn't remember if I'd had pains beforehand.

I have had precocious puberty I started my periods at 7 and my breasts had been developing 6 months by then.
I lost my virginity aged 9 years old to my babysitter who was the 14 year old son of my mums best friend

1youngmum... are you for real?

Carmenere · 24/01/2007 00:04

She is claiming to be 12 and pregnant with twins on another thread so I suspect she/he/it is just a bored teenage boy

The flumpsmum - how did you get on at the consultant yesterday??

If it is early puberty, can it be halted for a few years, or do you just have to go with it and make the best of it...?

I feel for you and your little girl - when I was growing up a friends sister went through this at age 7 and it was not nice for her at all...

I hope the consultant can help.
