Doc seems to think it is all a bed of rosesif you havehad 2 children close together as your cervix is a bit 'battered' so to speak.
Tell me the truth please! I am booked in to have it done.
Thanks.

Ps: Am off to change my name back now! lol

Well for me it was very painful as I have had both my children by CS but it was manageable. The bleeding afterwards lasted for an afternoon - not much and I had pretty bad cramps for that afternoon too. For the following couple of days I remember having a little bit of pain (only on one side!) and that was it. I have had no periods or pain or anything since (it was fitted in September) and I would recommend it but I know it's not for everyone.

MrsOhHu · 08/01/2007 18:45

I have a new one and it's great. It wasn't particularly comfortable to have fitted and it wasn't all that comfortable for a few days after, but it really wasn't at all bad. Getting it removed is a doddle. I didn't feel a thing. It is the best form of contraception I have used.

Sugarmagnolia · 08/01/2007 19:25

Getting it fitted was sore. Nothing near as bad as childbirth but still....ouch. Don't remember really what the pain/bleeding was like afterwards so probably not too bad. In the end I didn't like the side effects and had it removed which I hardly felt.

DarrellRivers · 08/01/2007 19:31

Getting it fitted was pretty straightforwards( 6 weeks post vaginal delivery plus took strong painkillers prior to fitting)
Cervix will be pretty easy to get coil in if you have had had recent vaginal deliveries.
Never had it taken it out , but do take them out myself in my line of work , and believe you me, it is so so easy, you won't feel a thing , so much easier than having it put in)

PoppiesMum · 08/01/2007 19:44

Easy and painfree - just felt a little scratch when it went in, and had some aches for a couple of hours after. Best contraception I've ever had!

twickersmum · 08/01/2007 19:49

am interested too...
when you say "recent" vaginal deliveries, my dd's are nearly 3 and 15 months... recent enough?
strong painkillers first - good plan!
what time in your cycle is best?

my friend who had 2 children, no pain relief, runs marathons etc.. (get the drift?) said it was agony.

DarrellRivers · 08/01/2007 19:52

Take something like voltarol/diclofenac 40mins before insertion and I reckon that decreases dramatically the pain that you get when the Doc puts the clamp(sorry) on your cervix, I'm sure that is the worst bit
Seriously , I wasn't even aware that she had put the coil in, I had to ask her!

ParanoidAndroid · 08/01/2007 19:52

It was fine going in. But I bled on and off for about 4/5 months with cramping as well. Not a huge amount but enough to need STs, and to catch me unawares.

I went to the GP to demand he remove it, and he said wait until 6 months because it should all stop by then. And it did, almost to the day!

Still get v. occasional spotting, and light cramping, but only maybe for a few minutes once a month.

gingermonkey · 08/01/2007 20:00

I had an old fashioned one (no hormones) fitted at my 6 week check up after ds and it was fine, I was expecting hideous pains but it was like a slight push, no pain at all. (Both my kids were born by section.) I have had no probs and my periods are really regular (they never were before) and quite a bit shorter than before, although really, really heavy for a day or so. I was on the pill for years and it messed with my libido so docs suggested the coil and I am so happy!

twickersmum · 08/01/2007 20:16

oh, good to hear about libido. i heard the mirena trashed it!

DarrellRivers · 08/01/2007 20:22

I think progesterone lowers your libido(ie the mirena) and quite frankly I need all the help I can get as I am fighting fatigue as well so I have plain copper coil and it is great.

twickersmum · 08/01/2007 20:25

but doesn't that have a risk of ectopic pg? (sorry if being very naive and feel free to tell me to go do some research!)

DarrellRivers · 08/01/2007 20:31

If you fall pregant with a normal coil you are more likley to have an ectopic pregnancy than an intrauterine pregnancy, but because it is a contraceptive and is 99% effective(sorry not sure exact figure) it doesn't increase your risk of an ectopic pregnancy becuase you are extremely unlikely to fall pregnant in the first place

twickersmum · 08/01/2007 21:39

thanks! def sthg i need to look into.

DimpledThighs · 08/01/2007 22:17

I have a non hormone one. Best form of contraception for me. I really cannot remember what insertion was like or bleeding afterwards - makes me think it can't have been that bad!

JoAndTheBoys · 08/01/2007 22:25

I had the non-hormone one fitted about 18 months ago after I came off depo - it wasn't as bad as I imagined, there was a doctor fitting it and a nurse stood with me monitoring my pulse while she did it.

The clamp thingy they use to open your cervix stung a bit, but I hardly felt it going in. However, once it was in I had a dull ache on one side low down which I can only remember describing as if the outer edge of the 'T' on the left was digging in me inside. It didn't go away and they weren't happy about my pulse and stuff as well so they took it back out, and that was that! I went back on the mini-pill after that, but i did find it buggered up my libido and moods, so would still recommend the coil to others. Just didn't 'sit well' in me!

expatinscotland · 08/01/2007 22:31

Too chicken to do it myself.

That whole clamp biz.

No, thanks! Two vaginal deliveries, one w/forceps, a loop diathermy, colpo.

I've had it w/that stuff, thanks!

I tried the mini-pill when I was still considering the coil, and I'm so glad I did, b/c I found out the hard way that progesten does horrible things to me - acne, no sex drive, non-stop bleeds, and my depression got SSSSOOOOOOO bad.

StayAtHomeMummy · 09/01/2007 09:11

Quite a long recent thread here

gingermonkey · 09/01/2007 09:20

Twickers, the mirena does trash the libido. Mine's the old fashioned copper one. When it was being put in I was asking the doc about it, thinking coil = barbed wire = pain but she showed me it and it was like a little stick. I don't get how they work at all, even tho she explained to me about the copper repelling or killing (or something)the sperm. Darrellrivers, you seem rather clued up on this subject, explain about the copper to me please!!!......

DarrellRivers · 09/01/2007 10:57

The copper does decrease fertilisation (egg and sperm meeting) but main action is to prevent implantation of fertilised egg in womb lining.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 09/01/2007 13:33

twickers- mine are 17months and 3 months old and doc says i have a 'trashed' cervix- lol, so you should too!!
