SHOULD I TELL DD SHE HAS...

heeadlice, or just treat them and tell her that it's a preventative lotion!

she's only 4.75 and am worried that she might be upset, or blab about it at school and them the other child might tease her

i know this is pretty trivial, but advice would be nice! TIA

treat her and just say you are using special cream to make sure she doesn't catch them from school That's what I did....

bakedpotato · 08/01/2007 17:31

I've told dd when she has nits. She was interested, but not at all upset. I've told her they jump from head to head so it's best not to push your head up against your friends' heads.
My attitude is, they all get 'em, so it's no big deal.
(Mind you, I don't tell her when she has worms.)

colditz · 08/01/2007 17:34

Mum told me when I had worms aged 5. I promptly told the lady who ran the corner shap, when asked why I wasn't at school, "I've got little worms up my vbottom"

frances5 · 08/01/2007 17:47

I wouldnt worry. You need to comb all the nits and eggs out for a few week. Lotions wont kill the eggs.

I think your daughter will be better about the situation than you think. If you explain to her what you are doing she will cooperate. She has probably all ready seen the things already. Dont worry about teasing, I expect that half her class has head lice.

We fine tooth comb my son's hair every week. He likes to shout at the top of his voice "Die! Ants Die!" or "Break their legs so they can't lay eggs!"

kseaj · 08/01/2007 17:49

when dd (4.10) i was not going to tell unless she asked, which she did do when i was treating them, so i told her. I agree with bakedpotato they all get them.

MamazonAKAfatty · 08/01/2007 17:50

Mine seem to have them almost constantly.

DS doesn't understand what nits are so i just tell him i have to check for spiders.

I no longer use any of the potions as they just dont work so we do the daily condition and come routine...that way he never knows if he has spiders or not.

I'm always upfront about headlice when I'm checking my 2 for them - we haven't had them yet ( fingers crossed) but loads of their classmates have - we get a note home from school asking us to check, so the kids are well aware of what they are.

If tehy do get them, I'm sure I will tell them - and I'd tell their friends parents as well so they could check their own kids

noonar · 08/01/2007 18:55

ok, folks, thanks so much for the advice. have actually told her that i thought i might've seen a little egg, and that the lotion was to get rid of it.

dh bought a new type of lotion that only stays on 15 mins, which was better than i was expecting.

mildmanneredjanitor, don't know if i know you or not...what makes you say that...are you being serious??? you've got me twitching now....

pointydog · 08/01/2007 19:34

I'd be upfront. Very upfront. If they don't bother about it no one is able to make them feel embarrassed about it.

colditz. I remember being age 5 telling my mum I had worms up my bum. She was puzzled how I ever knew

Tortington · 08/01/2007 19:36

my mum said to me "i'm treating your hair with special stuff so you don't catch headlice"

like it was a preventative

!!!! eh eh?

she later turned out insane - but i think thats quite good.

BettySpaghetti · 08/01/2007 19:38

If you tell her she has got them just be prepared that she will excitedly tell everyone she meets "Guess what? I've got headlice!"

Watching peoples reactions is great though!

noonar · 08/01/2007 19:43

custy, i guess i'm on the same wave length as your mum!!

betty, that's what i'm slightly nervous of- can see the funny side though

mildmanneredjanitor...where are you??

Kids are generally more accepting of nits then we are. My dd wanted to keep one of hers in a jar to see how long it lived for...

Ceolas · 08/01/2007 20:40

Why not. God I thought you were going to say cancer or something awful!

lucykate · 08/01/2007 20:40

personally i would tell her. dd knows all about them as i root through her hair usually every other day during term time. she's only in reception but has already had loads since september.

if you're woried the othe children might tease her, just remember, its them she's most likely got the little visitors from in the first place

garbo · 08/01/2007 20:54

I have told DD I am getting the itchy things out of her hair! She's 4.10. Apparently a nurse is coming to the junior school to check all children's hair so there must be an 'epidemic'.
