DS (nearly 3) STILL has cradle cap - it ain't dandruff - not flaky at all - just lovely and yellow [blush}
Will it just go sometime ... & when?? Anyone got any tips on treating it at this age - way too much hair to even comtemplate trying to get olive oil anywhere near...

My ds (10 mths) has had pretty bad cc - and also really thick hair - since he was born. It doesn't seem to bother him, and doesn't really show (tho haven't had his hair cut yet)I'd been assuming it was no problem and was just cosmetic??? Do I need to do something about it??? Advice please

funnypeculiar · 09/01/2007 16:40

Skibump - as far as I'm aware, totally cosmetic, so don't worry too much - I just felt that by three he ought to have been out of his 'cradle' phase

with mine it really irritated them, esp ds2. He used to claw at it and have vicious bloody scrathes all over the top of his head. It looked so bad, people used to stare in horro, and the brave few asked in hushed tones what was wrong with him. The others also scrached madly, but ds2 was the worst, but I accept in may cases it is cosmetic. Mine all had very thin hair so was very noticeable.

Foxabout2pop is that 'hair doesn't grow if they've got c an urdan myth, so to speak? DS has really thick hair now...

My ds still has it now aged 4, although nothing compared to six months ago when my hairdresser recommended NOT to wash his hair as frequently. We now wash his hair a maximum of three times a week and this has really helped.

Might not apply for everyone though but after trying various 'treatments' and 'methods' this is the only one that has given us noticeable results.

I'm another one with dd nearly 4 still has nice yellow crusty cradle cap, I think giving the hair a good firm brush/comb at the scalp would help but sometimes it's difficult enough to just brusch it. i'm going to try the o.o. not sure what will dd will think!

calor · 09/01/2007 21:39

All my 4 have had 'cradle cap'. Luckily, all have thick hair so it was never that obvious. It has been itchy for one of my boys and has continued, 2 of them are now in school and it is less but still there. Really it is sebhorric excema of the scalp. What is best is oilatum shampoo. Olive oil, dentinox ect- thay don't do anything. Hope that helps.

funnypeculiar · 09/01/2007 22:33

Thanks for the recommendation,calor, will try that.
Gave olive oil a go tonight. He was NOT impressed - 'mummy I do NOT like it, it is sllliiimmmyyyy'

funnypeculiar - perhaps it is an urban myth. I doubt if the hairdresser is much of an expert on cc TBH! Good point!

I just wan't DD's hair to thicken. Any suggestions anyone to thicken her hair - short of shaving her head which is what has been recommended!

I used th caradle cap shoampoo on my daughter and made sure nothing else went on her hair. Did use olive oil and it does get very sticky, I was lucky as she was only a baby and although she had hair she did not have it too thick. I used a eyebrow comb and slowly combed the scabs out (as adivsed on here I think) and it worked a treat. Maybeyou could lye your son on your lap with a towel over your legs and a very fine comb and gently comb them out when he has some oil in his hair (although you did say you did not want to do the oil it does work in the long run though!)
