PLEASE: Iron-rich food ideas for anaemic fussy eater

DS2 is 8. He was anaemic a couple of years ago, put on iron supplements and did really well. Lately I noticed he was very pale, so we had a new blood test and his results were VERY low.

He is being sent for a paediatric referral, and has a prescription for Iron syrup. But in the meantime, what are good, kid-friendly food ideas?

He's a really fussy eater. His favourite meals are very plain. But how can I get loads and loads of iron into him?

Thank you

... posts from people whose "fussy" DC ate meat paste, beans, identifiable fish, dried fruit, legumes, spinach, eggs, soups, any sauce, any veg, any fruit, casseroles, smoothies, muffins or chunks of meat.

You Do Not Know what It is to have a fussy eater child.

tbf, I suggested pasta, and my fussy eater wouldn't touch that either for years.

Broccoli has more iron than spinach. Kale is a brilliant source. Red meat, if you eat it. Lentils. Don't mix these with dairy as that counteracts the iron. Molasses - at my lowest iron levels id take a spoonful a day.

I also take spatone. A natural iron supplement you can get from boots.

I am a fellow anemic and my iron levels are in the safe zone now.

Just about to say childrens cereals, but see someone has beaten me to it! My midwife recommended them, as being very good for when you're sick of leafy greens.

I would think they'd be your best bet.

Lljkk I thought I was being extremely optimistic regards fussy eater consuming mussels tbh. But you never know?

I work with a woman who's son only eats cheese sandwiches on white bread and a couple of other items and can't begin to understand either how restrictive or frustrating this would be. I worked with an adult who only eat five items of food, chicken, steak, peas, bread and chips.

I know a 12yo who eats a particular brand of crisps, milk, orange juice and chocolate. We think that's the lot. He's a lovely very sensible mature lad, sporty. Does have a health issue, mind. His mom is luckily very laid back.

cooking in a cast iron pan will also help.
