Am i an idiot for worrying that DD has inherited my short-sightedness?

she's only one, and recently has started frowning a lot when looking at things for the first time.

now, of course she might just be cross, lord knows, but as someone who is really badly short-sighted and a total specky four eyes it does make me worry.

i'm sure i remember seeing someone say (could it have been twiglett?) that her son is being referred to someone, but i can't remember anything else.

do they do eye tests for babies? how can they? ooooh, i don't know anything any more...

No, you're not an idiot for worrying - you're a mum - it's part of the job description (above "nappy-changing", below "tickles").

I wonder occasionally about it too - my eyesight was pretty bad (-5.0ish in both eyes) and I have needed glasses since I was 7.

Yes, they do eyesight tests for babies - Misdee knows about it as her DD3 wears glasses.

I would say your DD could be frowning because she's concentrating - does that fit with her expression, do you think?

AitchTwoOhOhSeven · 06/01/2007 01:14

no, she's scowling. she looks, albeit briefly, like evil incarnate.
but also it looks like she's re-focusing iykwim? and she never does it with close-up stuff, just far away. i'm 7s and 8s on my sight prescription, i can't remember whether the numbers are negative or not but i know that it's BAD.

i got glasses when i was 8. huh-ated them. but then they were brown nhs ones as folks were to skint to get proper ones. and even at that age i refused to get involved in the gender specificity of the blue and pink ones. that's making me laugh now, what an awkward child i was... hope dd is easier.

at one I dont think it's short sightedness... I had an eye op at 3, so, I think they do detect quite early xXx

AitchTwoOhOhSeven · 06/01/2007 01:19

but you know i studiously avoid all HVs etc, quootie, so who picks it up?

Listen chicken, I am no authority, but have long-sightedness and an astagmatism!!! Had it from birth, diagnosed when 5! Was paranoid for DS1- can only say yearly eye-sight tests will be non-negotiable seeing as you have poorly eyes. Ds1 ok, but have noticed DD1 as being cross-eyed.

I used to do 'magic eyes' when I was a kid (post glasses) Thought I could see two everything!!

It's rubbish, and my eyes are too bad to be lasered. I suffered immense bullying because of it,. BUT I AM A SUPER STRONG PERSON BECAUSE OF IT. At my age (i'M 28 NOW. i was the only kid in school with glasses but now, lots of children have them. Glasses are a way of life for me.

I wear contact lenses when I go out,and feel no less of a woman for wearing them!

Millions of people wear glasses, and if your DD needs glasses, don't cry (like my Mum did!!) You can get eye tests from about 18 months old if you have bad eyes yourself, by the way!

Quootiepie · 06/01/2007 01:20

ummmm.... think my mum, then sent me to a specialist. I has a squint. Still got it Get bupa.

Quootiepie · 06/01/2007 01:21

*had

hunkermunker · 06/01/2007 01:21

Ha ha I had blue NHS ones because I was being rebellious and didn't want pink on my face. They were shit, weren't they?!

funkimummy · 06/01/2007 01:22

FYI, I am _+4.50 in one eye, and +3.75 in other

AitchTwoOhOhSeven · 06/01/2007 01:28

number one, thank you for calling me chicken. hilarious and lovely of you.
i have had glasses for yonks, and i was bullied but i didn't care too greatly. i love my specs now (a rather fetching green cats eye Mikli/Starck collaboration, since you ask) but i would nevertheless prefer that DD didn't have the hassle of them.
I occasionally dream of what it would be like to step into the shower and SEE the bloody shampoo, to step out and not have to footer around for my specs when i get back out...
DH has 20/20 vision, and i was hoping that she might inherit that. the scowling has me worried cos at least i got 8 spec-free years, but it must be a pain in the arse having to wear specs when you are running around being a wee kid etc.

the pink ones were unbelievably shit.
but the blue ones were for boys...

Sorry, so very sorry. I call my DS1 'chickej'. It's an Essex way of calling someone 'darling'! I was bullied for so many years I can't remember. So sorry, for upsetting you. I'm mortified. Just trying to let you know what it feels like for someone who is blind as a bat (ca't be lasered - eyes just too pants!!!)

Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry

funkimummy · 06/01/2007 01:37

mis-typed - mean 'chicken'. In too much trouble already. My sympathies are with you. have same trouble with both children

AitchTwoOhOhSeven · 06/01/2007 01:38

are you nuts? i LOVED it! i am not the sort of person who gets called chicken, by and large. it made me feel all affection-y and wee. shut UP with the sorries.

OP posts:
Quootiepie · 06/01/2007 01:39

sorries?

funkimummy · 06/01/2007 01:39

And i needed them from day I was born!!!! never noticed till I was 5 !!!!! blind as bloody bat!!! Would love real eyes. so paranoid either one of my children will inherit my pants eyes

AitchTwoOhOhSeven · 06/01/2007 01:40

my sodding corneas are too thin to be lasered. the only part of me that is...

although I'm probably too chicken to do it, really. (please note correct use of the word chicken )

Quootiepie · 06/01/2007 01:46

I dont think there is a plural - I have been googling...

funkimummy · 06/01/2007 01:48

Oh bugger, bloody, B£$$^$£%cks!! I was just trying to be really nice!!!!!

I live in the back of beyond - Forgive me if I don't use 'chicken' properly. As in, ' I eat chicken' (CORRECT) 'How are you, chicken?' (WRONG) We're all backwards in this county!!!!!!!
