spent all week worrying about ds2 and now dh has come home from work and gone to bed saying he feels ill and really really cold.

dh is usually a rough and ready sort, rarely ill. i have just been upstairs to see him and he says he feels bad and burst into tears!
he says he has headache, sore throat and is very very cold and can't sleep.
i expect this with the kids but not dh!

should i do anything? this is weird...he doesn't cry much!

i'm worried

sounds like a bad virus to me
don't want to worry you but has he any rashes??

Crotchety · 05/01/2007 20:37

We've just had a week/10 days along these lines - some sort of flu thing we reckon. Both of us felt very cold a lot of the time. Has taken ages to get over.

gingernut · 05/01/2007 20:39

Give him some ibuprofen to reduce his temperature (if he feels cold he is probably running a temp). Should help with the headache as well, and make him comfortable enough to sleep. And get him to drink plenty of fluids.

If he can't take ibuprofen try paracetamol (but ibuprofen is usually better for reducing temperatures IME).

Sounds like he has a flu-like virus.

Posey · 05/01/2007 20:41

Sounds like when I had flu, proper flu, not just a bad cold everyone calls flu. Flu is bloomin awful, probably the illest(!) a lot of people will be in their younger days. He needs really dosing up, lots of rest, lots of fluids.

Wallace · 05/01/2007 20:44

Oddly enough we had a virus recently where one of the first symptoms seemed to be getting all weepy HTH

CheeryGarcia · 05/01/2007 20:46

My 23 year old son had something that sounds very similar over Christmas and he cried all over me on Christmas Day. He hasn't done that in very many years. Bless.

cheeryface · 05/01/2007 20:48

i have took him some paracetamol up.

he has had the flu jab at work.
says it's a terrible thumping headache

men........

but please god noone else gets it, i don't think i can cope
seemed to come on quite suddenly though. i just don't know whether he is being soft or is really ill i need of attention.

can just see me taking a great big 38 year old in to A & E whimpering

i know, i had proper flu once never before or after have i felt that ill and dh went to the bloody pub!

it took months before i felt right.

but, like i say he's had the jab so it wouldn't be that would it

OP posts:
cheeryface · 05/01/2007 20:58

should i just leave him be do you think?

OP posts:
CheeryGarcia · 05/01/2007 21:02

Yes, leave him be with lots of fluids - keep a look out for the usual warning signs. My son recovered within 48 hours - fully back to normal within 72 hours. He mainly slept. No one else in the house went down with it, though I think his gf might have got a bit too close...

littlemissbossy · 05/01/2007 21:03

Lots of fluids and continue with the paracetamol or ibuprofen which is stronger but better at bringing temperatures down plus will help with any swelling in the throad, ears etc. Hope he's feeling better soon - loads of viruses about at the mo.

cheeryface · 05/01/2007 21:04

what warning signs?

i am the worst nurse ever cos i suffer anxiety and it's mainlt health related. hate it when anyones ill

OP posts:
CheeryGarcia · 05/01/2007 21:08

Oh cheeryface, it'll be OK! Main warning signs are a very high temp that doesn't come down with paracetamol/ibuprofen and any sudden appearance of a rash.

Crotchety · 05/01/2007 21:14

Cheeryface I identify about the health anxiety - automatically assume the worst, especially with the kids. Can't stop myself.

cheeryface · 05/01/2007 21:14

hope so, i'm sat here thinking, how do i know if dh has a rash he's in bed, he might be dead in the morning.

i rely on him normally to keep me rational and now he is acting bizarre

MariNativityPlay · 05/01/2007 21:15

cheery, when did he have that flu jab? Dh gets one from work too and it makes him feel incredibly low for about 48 hours within the following week.
There is also a ghastly virus doing the rounds.
Hope he feels better soon and you don't get it...

cheeryface · 05/01/2007 21:32

it was ages ago

OP posts:
gingernut · 06/01/2007 00:26

Flu does tend to come on quite quickly...from first feeling ill to having to retire to bed is only a matter of 2-3 hours IME.

He could still have flu even if he's had the jab, as it only protects against some strains (they try to predict which starins are likely to be most prevalent in any particular year, but it is never failsafe).

Try to get hold of some ibuprofen if you don't have any (as long as he can take it).
