How are all the asthmatic children doing at the moment?

Dd appears ok having finally got over the chesty cough that feels like it was with us for months! We've gone back down to her normal steroid dose and fingers crossed (because she's back at school this week and bound to pick up something horrible!), we'll be able to stay at a lower dose for a while.

I feel a bit uneasy tbh - maybe it's something to do with the weather but normally by now, because of the cold air, she'd be coughing quite a bit. I'm just hoping it's not the calm before the storm iyswim.

How are all the other asthmatic ones at the moment?

just in case any of the other asthmatic ones are around at the moment

misdee · 04/01/2007 17:40

dd1 asthma is still quite bad. is still on 8 puffgs of becotide a day and still having a lot more of ventolin than usual.

foxinsocks · 04/01/2007 17:40

oh misdee, what a nightmare! Has she had a cold or has something else triggered it off being worse?

coppertop · 04/01/2007 17:41

So far so good.

Ds2 had a bit of a cough before Christmas but it's gone now. Ds1 hasn't had any colds yet (touchwood!) I usually find March-time to be the worst time of year. It's when the weather seems to warm up a bit but the air feels damp IYKWIM.

coppertop · 04/01/2007 17:42

Crossed posts with misdee. Poor dd1.

Blandmum · 04/01/2007 17:43

OKish

Ds is always worse in the winter, and is now back on inhalled steroids, and the odd puff of reliever in the week.

Cold air makes him more sensitive, as does having a cold.

misdee · 04/01/2007 17:44

she has had several attacks leading to this bad period. she has had a slight cough, but is feeling tight an awful lot atm. need to get her seen by the asthma nurse really.

foxinsocks · 04/01/2007 17:46

that's good news coppertop (touch wood!).

Think early Spring is a difficult time because so many bugs go around then as well! Our worst time is definitely when there is cold air and at hayfever time (so late Spring/early summer).

Poor dd misdee - perhaps she needs different inhalers?

hope the steroids will see him through the rest of winter martianbishop - we haven't really had a bad cold spell yet. That's what worries me a bit.

OP posts:
Blandmum · 04/01/2007 17:52

In the summer we are without steroids, and only restarted them in nov. he is also triggered bt animal fur

misdee · 04/01/2007 17:55

in the spring we can often be reliver inhaler free. always use the becotide, but usually 4 puffs a day.

singersgirl · 04/01/2007 18:00

DS2 was steroid free this summer, but back on his fluticasone now. Has had a lingering cough for weeks, but it's not really asthma any more. Fingers crossed this winter hasn't been too bad for him.

DS1 had a bad (for him) attack at the beginning of November. He hasn't had one since the same time last year, and, given his food intolerances, I think it's all the 'banned 'stuff I let him have for Halloween.

foxinsocks · 04/01/2007 18:16

That's interesting that you've identified a specific food trigger singersgirl. Does that mean avoiding a whole group of foods for him?

Animal hair a big problem here too mb - at least it's a good excuse for refusing to get a mog or dog!

OP posts:
swedishmum · 04/01/2007 18:36

Is there a definite test for animal hair? Dd has been much worse since dh brought a dog home.

foxinsocks · 04/01/2007 18:43

we haven't had dd tested but have noticed it worsening when we are at friends' houses (who have hairy animals). Dh's asthma is made a lot worse by animal hair so it wasn't entirely unexpected that dd would react this way.

You can get a skin prick test or a blood test - ask your GP. They will probably need to refer you for them.

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 04/01/2007 18:44

refer your dd I mean!

I'm just going to bump this up in case welshboris is around. I see she's spent a few days in hospital with her dd with asthma poor thing.

OP posts:
Blandmum · 05/01/2007 17:51

We have never had ds formally tested, but his allergy is very obvious. Within abpout 30 minutes of being in a house with a cat or a dog he will start to cough and wheeze and his eyes and nose start to run.

That is about the only major trigger he has, thankfully. We don't have any hairy pets, or ds would be hospitalised on a regular basis

swedishmum · 05/01/2007 18:42

Thanks - will speak to clinic. My asthma was much worse when the dog first came but it's fine now. Dog isn't allowed into carpeted areas. He's still a mad labrador teenager anyway!

welshboris · 05/01/2007 18:45

Another nightmare few days, really wheezy and lethargic on Wednesday morning so took her into the Paed assessment unit in our local hospital. Kept her in until this afternoon.

I hate hospitals, hate asthma, hate the cold weather.

Only a week ago she got over meningitis, dont know how much more I can take.

Overrun · 05/01/2007 18:50

Ds1 seems better this winter overall. Still on becotide, but we have just stopped using the servent at night.
DT1 seems okay as well, no wheezy periods for a while

emkana · 05/01/2007 19:00

Ds has just finished three days of oral steroids. He's also on becotide, uses reliever inhalers regularly, constantly on AB's, Singulair... but he still goes bad all the time.

overrun, what is servent?

Welshboris, I feel so sorry for you, hope things improve soon!

welshboris · 05/01/2007 19:04

Thanks emkana, DD is on a 5 day course of steroids this time, keeping on the becotide and ventolin 4 hourly until tomorrow.

She's so healthy usually, when she's like this I feel like my world stops.

The nurse mentioned sigulair this morning, what is it?

welshboris · 05/01/2007 19:05

And thanks to foxinsocks for bumping this for me

Greensleeves · 05/01/2007 19:08

Boris, I haven't seen you on here for AGES

She had meningitis? How horrendous for you, really terrible, you must have been frantic

I hate asthma too, I hate the damn puffers and the coughing fits when they go out in the early mornings when it's cold - am still hoping it's all temporary in my boys' case. Have you had any more info/prognosis about dd's?

Sorry I have missed you lately!

foxinsocks · 05/01/2007 19:08

oh welshy, how frightening . I hope it's 'just' a case of a bad run of health (iyswim). It is just too awful when they are ill like that.

What's the progress with all the specialists emkana?
