Week 10 of 52 Small Changes

Week 10 is Time to Stretch.

Stretch a minimum of 20 minutes three times a week to maintain flexibility.

Roadmap for Success Stretching doesn’t require fancy equipment or very much time. And it can be done anywhere. If you have any chronic conditions or injuries, be sure to consult your physician or physical therapist before beginning any exercise or stretching program.

When to Stretch Although stretching can be done anytime, anywhere, it’s always important to stretch when you exercise. Stretch after a warm-up and as part of a cool-down. At these times, your muscles are warm, which makes stretching easier and more effective. If you stretch at times other than during exercise, first warm up muscles by taking a fast-paced, five-minute walk while pumping your arms to increase circulation. Also, if you have an especially tight area of your body, stretch that area more often or throughout the day.

In the Morning: During sleep, muscles tend to tighten up due to lack of activity. Although it’s best to stretch when your muscles are warm, gentle morning stretches may help to alleviate stiffness and increase circulation, which makes waking up easier. Be sure to ease into stretches so you don’t strain yourself.

After Sitting for a Long Period: Whether you’re at work, on an airplane, or watching TV, sitting for extended periods of time can cause a great deal of muscle stiffness and soreness. If you are sitting for more than an hour, get up, walk around, and do some of the stretches explained above.

And we are keeping up with:
1 drinking water
2 getting better sleep
3 moving more
4 keeping a food journal
5 being positive
6 taking a multivitamin
7 having a buffer zone between outside and inside
8 eating more veg
9 finding time alone

Destinysdaughter come and sit on my bench sweetheart.

I know soooo much about what is good for me but don't do it Blush

Destinysdaughter · 03/03/2016 06:02

Haha me too! It's getting motivated to actually do it that's the problem. That's why these threads are so good. Smile

Allgunsblazing · 03/03/2016 06:17

Do you know, I feel so much less stiff now after the streches!!!
About to have a bit more coffee, then stretch then meditate. Then work.
I'm not that type, really, but my DD pinned on pinterest something that made me laugh: if I ever leave my head down it will be only to admire my shoes. Grin I do love my shoes...

quirkychick · 03/03/2016 11:16

Bewitched and Destiny Grin I was just thinking today, I have played around doing yoga on and off most of my life: my parents did it when I was young, again in my 20s etc. so why has it taken me until my mid 40s to actually really do it? . Same is true for quite a few other things.

I have done my (old-and-gathering-dust-only-ever-done-it-once-dvd) of Shiva Rea's Yoga for Beginners 3 times now. I fancied a change after Yoga Camp. I have just ordered her Daily Energy which is 20min sessions to fit in every day or not. I used her pg dvds before and after having dcs which were super calming. I think I might alternate these and some Yogalates ones with Adriene's ones on YouTube. I definitely miss it when I don't do it.

Sleep not too bad, 7 hrs last night and 2 nights at 8 hrs (Headspace sleep pack is telling me I need a regular bedtime routine/time).
Vits ok, and I have started the maca powder in my coffee in the mornings, we'll see how it goes.
Water good, veg good, reasonably active but could do better!

I think the small changes definitely help to make things become habit, whereas trying to change everything sets you up to fail.

Pointlessfan · 03/03/2016 17:40

I haven't done very well with stretching so far and I'm not sleeping well, I keep waking up at 5. Lots of water and veg though.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 03/03/2016 20:08

These threads also make me realise how conscientious you all are.

You already have lots of good habits.

I'm good on the sleeping, eating veg, being positive and multi-vit < that's really taxing Grin

Intermittent with the water and stretching.

Rubbish with exercise.

V. good with lots of bad habits!

quirkychick · 03/03/2016 21:41

Bewitched I think I am only better because I am logging it here! When we started this, I was recovering from a chest infection, Christmas indulgences and was most definitely not being very active or much else.

I am good on drinking plenty of water, eating lots of veg and taking supplements. A lot of my good habits have been a bit intermittent. I like this thread because it gives me a gentle kick up the backside Grin.

Destinysdaughter · 03/03/2016 22:31

Me too! At least these things are in my consciousness and it's good to hear others' struggles and successes.

margaritasbythesea · 03/03/2016 23:01

Me too!

And me too pointlessfan. I put it down to a poorly knee. I keep expecting it to get better but it keeps getting worse and waking me up.

Does anyone know what the bit at the back of your knee between the two ligaments is called? Because that's the bit that hurts!

Sirona · 04/03/2016 09:27

Allguns, I can only do bridge for a few seconds myself and that's a struggle. I hope your dd is feeling a bit better.

Thanks quirky, I might give the 30 days a go then.

Ha Grin I'm not very good at things either, fear not. I can do it a week or two but I find it hard being consistent. I've noticed I've ben swopping a lot of my water for coffee again, my vegetable intake isn't great and sleeping has been backsliding. However this thread has made me more aware, draws me back into it and not just giving up.

Sounds painful margarita, maybe worth seeing a doctor about. I dare say pain there could be any host of problems. I've had clicking there on the back of the knee and it was very sore and weak feeling going up and down stairs especially but mine was exercise related. Doing too much too soon.

Was feeling a bit rotten yesterday, did nothing bar take a good walk with dd. I think I have a cold working on me, dd's very nasally and heavy eyed looking too. May give myself a shake as I'm out for my birthday later. May be swopping the coffee that I've swopped for water for wine Grin

DrDiva · 04/03/2016 10:03

Yes to this thread keeping me on track and not just giving up! I am much better at the things I have to do anyway - so eating veg since I have to eat anyway, drinking water ditto, sleep if I am in bed and not dealing with toddleritis. Things like stretching I find harder because I have to find time for it.
Margarita could it be meniscus damage? I had/have that, apparently common in women over 35ish and can be dealt with quite well. I occasionally get twinges, but nothing too bad as long as I am not dragged up a mountain in Cuba on one sardine and a slice of toast

quirkychick · 04/03/2016 16:38

Flowers for you margaritas I hope your knee gets better soon. I had a horrible twingy knee when we started this, but mine was either side of the kneecap.

Actually, bridge pose I find quite easy, and dancer pose. Forward bends, crossed-legged poses, anything that stretches the hip flexors or hamstrings I look like an 80yr old! Still, I am working on it Smile.

Destinysdaughter · 04/03/2016 19:42

I bought a stretching band in Tiger for £3! You can stretch hamstrings by just lying on the floor, putting the band under your foot, holding it and lifting your leg up. Or you could just use a long scarf...

Like I said, if you've got time to watch TV, you can stretch whilst watching it, especially as a lot of v beneficial stretches can be done lying down! ( says to self...)

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 04/03/2016 22:15

Is anyone in touch with OddSocks?

I would love to just know that she's OK.

DrDiva · 05/03/2016 20:08

Sadly no, bewitched. I too would love to know if she is ok.

OP posts:
Sirona · 05/03/2016 22:17

I would like to know if she's ok too, I hope so.

Just finished my stretches so that's my three done for the week :) Concentrated mainly on my legs again, was wearing heels on a night out yesterday and they felt like they needed a good stretch.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 06/03/2016 19:10

Hope you've all had a lovely day Flowers

I have done precisely none of the small changes except multivit, but I have had good time with DD1 and some old friends Grin

quirkychick · 06/03/2016 21:27

I have not done many of the small changes today... Headspace, multivitamin, water, veg. However, rubbish sleep, not much exercise, quite a bit of Mother's Day chocolate, coffee Grin. I had a lovely day, though. The dcs got me a scarf (that I chose) and dd1 gave me a t shirt she designed at an activity yesterday...oh and some delicious chocolates!

Back to it tomorrow.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 06/03/2016 23:05

Oh yeah, don't really count sleep and veg 'cos I did those anyway so not changes.

Laugh so much all your mascara falls off, can we have that as a change one week?

I can do that too Grin

DrDiva · 06/03/2016 23:14
