Having A Coil Fitted?

Can anyone help me here - after finally deciding that after 2 kids a coil (just the regular sort) would be my best birth control option I went to have it fitted today. However the Doctor couldn't do it as apparently my cervix went into spasms, snapped tightly shut and she could not get it in and did not want to force it. She has asked me to come back again next Monday - 'to try once more' but said that it might happen again. So then what? How do I relax my cervix? (swallowed nearly a whole bottle of rescue remmedy as it was!) Is this common? What else can I do to allow it to happen? It is all turning into a bit of a prolonged nightmare!

Indie - I've had a couple of coils fitted in the last 6 m. The first was a regular one and didn't agree with me at all (periods lasting 2 weeks!) but then I had a mirena coil fitted. Unbeknowns to me, the fitting of this coil can be fairly traumatic, which I didn't find out until afterwards when I heard the doc talking to the student doc and the nurse (thought it was funny to have such a big audience!) altho I didn't have any probs. Doc said that if they have any probs it is possible to give local anaesthetic - don't know if this wld help the spasm effect tho?

Maybe a very large whisky lol!!

Sorry, no more constructive advice, I had no probs with my mirena but I think it was because I had it done within 6 weeks of childbirth.
All the best!!

I'm thinking about having a coil but you need to wait until your periods restart don't you? My baby is 11 months and they haven't yet.......

My gp said that if you've had your kids by c-section, the passage - so to speak - isn't big enough to get the coil through, so a local anaesthetic is the answer.
Does that help?!

You don't need to wait until your periods restart but they will do a pg test before they put it in if they havent, just in case!!

Thanks for the replies! Took painkillers before I went last time - didn't seem to help though! Also had a c-section with the last baby but not with the first - so not sure if my cervix is 'big' enough or not!!

I think the local anaesthetic might be the way to go - must ask if that is possible!

AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had 3 coils pre-kids and they were fine. Tried after caesarian no 2 ( after 2 v long labours and hours fully dilated ) and went into weird shock state all 3 tries (shaking, faint, uncontrollable states really; don't think it was 'psycological'. Staff not v helpful, wouldn't go along with any sedation or ga, but so bad I can't contemplate another try. Stuck with horrible condoms now. Does anyone know anywhere who would do it under sedation/ga? I would travel (and pay)
