About my potato peeler incident...

So having peeled off all of one side of my finger nail plus some flesh on xmas day and rapidly covered with several plasters I am now wonderign how to fix said finger.

It really hurts and am having to wear fake tan gloves in the bath to keep it dry. All very annoying and sore. Surely it will heal soon - why does it hurt?

What are you supposed to do about fallen off nails? The skin underneath is obviously very, very sensitive.

By the way, I taped the flap of nail back over where it shoul have been but there is skin missing - will it stick back on?

ew i feel ikky now! keep it covered, the flappy nail will probably die and you could cut it off but only when it's dry iykwim! sounds nasty

idontlikecrusts · 28/12/2006 20:00

Sorry, I should have pit an ikky warning in the title.

Maybe I should take the palsters of so it can dry out a bit but I'm worried about it catching on things and hurting.

Would be better if I didn't have nappies to change and arses to wipe, frankly.

keep it off at night? it'll take a while to heal properly

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 28/12/2006 20:05

Change the plaster every day and try to give it as much fresh air as you can.

The nail will fall off, so don't worry about that. It'll be fine in a couple of days.

Urgh! I just took the plaster off - tis rank!

Think I should have done so earlier.

Thanks for advice.

crusts, have you been to the doctor with this? I had a similar thing once where I scraped the skin off one side of my finger on a broken tile. I know these things aren't major but they can get infected or heal badly and they might at least be able to give you a useful dressing.

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 28/12/2006 20:18

You can buy suitable dressings from the pharmacist. You can get antiseptic too. That's all the gp will give you.

idontlikecrusts · 28/12/2006 20:19

I haven't. I felt a little pathetic actually doing a whole post here about it but it is bothering me now because it is still sore.

I think taking the palster of will help as it wasn't going to get better as it was - as I have discovered now that I have removed plaster and seen it in all its soggy discoloured glory.

You need antiseptic. Change the plaster every day. Keep it clean by washing it every day. Don't put anything on it other than antiseptic.

Not as bad as cheese grating the tip of your finger though! (a few years ago)

idontlikecrusts · 28/12/2006 20:26

ouch!

These kitchen items seem, well, just sooo innocuous, don't they?

I don't know whether to blame the turnips or the peeler of my dd for rabbiting on in my ear while I cooked!
