thread worms

This is v embarrassing....

I have had problems with vaginal discharge & abdominal pains for ages. Drs have been unable to find a cause forit and antibiotics have not worked. Yesterday I noticed a white thread like thing around 2cm long when I went to the loo. Could this be worms? If so can they contribute to the problems I have been having?

Was the white thing moving?

I don't think worms cause abdominal pains, but they can cause vaginal itching, certainly.

stupid question alert..but could the white thing be a string from a forgotten tampon..that would definiely cause pain & discharge...

Horrid question but have you had beansprouts recently? My sis once rang me horrified but luckily we figured out it was more than likely the chinese she had the day before! I think threadworms don't get that long?

NotQuiteCockney · 28/12/2006 11:05

2cm does sound a bit long for a threadworm, it's true.

You can end up with bits of toilet paper that look like threadworms, too.

NbgSparklyYellowFeathers · 28/12/2006 11:05

Yes you can get abdominal pain from worms.
My dd had them a week before xmas and i was told this by the gp.
I got some stuff over the counter called Ovex. 1 capful and thats it. We did treat the whole family though just to be sure.

marimoo · 28/12/2006 13:19

yes it was moving, although I am not too sure whether this was the movement of the water in the loo rather than the thing itself. It looked like a cotton thread, so a bit thinner than a tampon string or a beansprout! I don't think anything is stuck inside as I have had 2 scans and a laparoscopy, both of which showed nothing. If you took a worms medicine, is that something you can but in Boots off the shelf or do you have to ask dr / chemist for it?

I think the worms medicine is behind the counter - you need to talk to the pharmacist. Ovex is one brand.

Have you been having vaginal/anal itching, particularly at night? That's the biggest normal symptom of worms, although I gather some people don't experience it.

marimoo · 28/12/2006 13:51

Yes it does itch. I thought this may have been down to the vaginal discharge I have been suffering with. I am just keen to get to the bottom of it (no pun intended!) and to finally end having to waer panty liners every day. Part of me thinks I am clutching at straws and I do not want to go to the doctors with something this embarrassing unless I was pretty sure.
