Any recommendations for one that works. My 5yo has been coughing nearly non-stop for the last 3 days. Tixylix isn't doing any good and she won't have actifed. Any others worth a try?

thanks.

would she drink hot water with some honey and lemon in? IIRC no cough medicine is all that effective.

QuootiepieTheChristmasAss · 26/12/2006 21:09

Im pretty sure Buttercup is for 2+...

MerlinsBeard · 26/12/2006 21:09

hot (well warm) blackcurrant jelly to drink works well for us usualy, as well asa wet flannel over the radiator at night to stop the tickle

busybusymum · 26/12/2006 21:10

my GP told me none of them do any good.
Sorry.

BaileysMilkshake · 26/12/2006 21:14

Like BBM, my GP told me they are only mechanical.

However Tixylixx does work for me. DD also gets relief from Benylin

Good Luck!

Now if there was just something that would work for a 2 week old with a cold.

I've tried Nelsons Sootha - It's a homeopathic childs cough syrup, so you have to get it in a health food shop.
I know lots of people don't 'believe' in homeopathy, but it worked for us.
And as none of the pharmecuetical ones work anyway there's nothing to lose

BaileysMilkshake · 26/12/2006 21:23

I am a homeopath convert since taking arnica after giving brth 2 weeks ago. I could not belive how well it worked until I forget to take it!

My boss is a GP.... he has 2 children 1 and 3

we dont even have any in the hosue cause he is adament that they dont work and that there is no point taking them!

kid · 27/12/2006 00:12

DS has suffered from a few chest problems and the Dr told me not to give him cough medicine as it will just shift the cough to his chest. I don't know if that goes for all children or just those with a history of chest problems.
After his most recent cough, I was advised to give him hot fruit juice. His cough was virtually gone within 2 days.

But a lot of the cough syrups have pseudo-ephdrine in them which is a decongestant (I think). I think it's the main ingredient in Sudafed. I imagine it might make a tiny difference.

Have never bothered myself to give it to DCs, but we bought a bottle recently & may yet remember to offer it to DCs.

MerryBiglipsmas · 27/12/2006 00:21

try pure honey off the spoon as it works for my dd as she doesnt half cough it all up after she had taken it

Sugarmagnolia · 27/12/2006 08:04

Another vote for Sootha - I agree that no cough medicine works that well but it does seem to ease the tickle. Also, sitting in a hot steamy bathroom can help.

Furball · 27/12/2006 08:57

manuka honey off the spoon is good coughs

foxtrottothefestivegrotto · 27/12/2006 08:59

benylin cough and cold (in the green box) seems to work and tastes better than tixylix.
