Varifocals vs two pairs of glasses

Not sure if this is the right thread to be on. Anyway I am 40 and my eyesight has changed. Have just got a pair of glasses for reading/ computer, but I am wondering if varifocals would have been better, because I tend to do stuff like watch to and go on my iPad, and I work in a school and look at a smart board then down at a computer. I originally had glasses that corrected my astigmatism and I could use mainly for distance. So basically I need separate glasses for near and distance, but I don't need them all the time.

As others have said, Boot's do a refund if you can't adjust after 30 days.

I have the same sort of eyesight as yours, including astigmatism. I've tried them twice now, the second time with the very best and most expensive lenses.

But I felt really unsafe wearing them for stairs, crossing the road and driving. And with reading, it was so irritating to have to keep turning my head. It was like losing peripheral vision.

So I took them back and I manage with two pairs as before.

I've just got varifocals (two weeks ago) and have found it has taken time to get used to them (keep moving my head not my eyes). They were horridly expensive, my opticians advised me about lenses and best size frames.

I hate wearing glasses and have always worn contact lenses until I lost my sight in my left eye 3 years ago and could only wear glasses. New glasses following more surgery but this time to my right eye.

Op now back in range for contact lenses (astigmatism and was -14.75 in that eye) so daily contact lense to minimise risk of infection from poor cleaning etc to remaining eye plus occupational glasses to read/use computer at work I still need varifocals in the evening to rest eyes/contacts out. So much for hoping for cheaper glasses I have more now than ever!

Meant to add that as I joined the contact lense scheme you get glasses for half price which is a good job as my glasses cost £575!! I always get thinist lenses due to my prescription and the sunglasses bit they change in light can't remember what it's called. Still get 30 days if I don't get on with them to return them so thought was worth a go.

I've had varifocals for around 10 years and am very happy with them; I also have astigmatism. After the first couple of days I've had no problem dealing with stairs, and the only time I've had to turn my head when reading is when I'm reading something that goes across the entire width of a computer screen - there's not problems with books and A4 size pages.

Wonder if it has anything to do with how wide-set your eyes are? I have a narrow face, eyes quite close together, compared with some.

I read v quickly and found it really annoying, like being a spectator at Wimbledon. My instinct was to take my glasses off when looking quickly to right and left at a road junction or parking, which seemed to defeat the object.

But try them and see. There was no problem in getting a refund from Boot's and my two pairs of glasses were much cheaper.

I have such a narrow face that most adult glasses are too big for me. I love my varifocals and have no problem with them at all.
