dh is in a huff so i'm up for a chat

Bimblin · 23/12/2006 23:11

OK. My dp has just come in after a night out so.. here's my questions: what insulin do you have? Have you thought about a pump? What's your HbA1c? How long have you been T1? Do you worry your dc is diabetic? Are you going to have another one? Sorry for all the questions, don't meet many other T1s. I'm trying to force my consultant to give me a pump, he isn't keen but my gp is.

no have never been offered a pump. i have a pen and seem to be able to control ok that way
i take lantus at night and novorapid before meals/ when i need to depending on what the blood sugar test says
last HBA1C was 6.2 so not bad( unbelievavle actual but will probably mess it up over Christmas
have been T1 for 28 years
only have adopted child( but do worry about her having it too- as there is a history)
can't have my own due to messed up tubes

please tell me more about the pump- as i know very little

Bimblin · 23/12/2006 23:25

Well my HbA1c was 5.8 whilst pregnant but about 7% since. The NICE guidelines say to get a pump you must have hypo unawareness to get one and i was wary of that as thought I might lose my driving license but have been in casualty twice in the last 12 months so talked to my gp. Whilst pg I was on a yahoo group for pg T1s and they all have pumps - sounds great. Pumps sound great - I am tired of hypos.
How come you adopted a child? How is it going? I am 30 and have been d since age 5. Got pg by accident and apart from major retinopathy whilst pg have been fine. How are you?

i'm great thanks.
No kids due to major fertility probs- not diabetes( they say) but 6 years of IVf 5 miscarriages and an emergency op has finished all that. (a huge relief actually)
Adopted dd after parents died of cancer. (she is my neice)
there you go
going well after 5 years.v happy

why has no-one ever mentioned a pump to me at the clinic? is it just for Pg or can any db get one.?

Bimblin · 23/12/2006 23:41

They don't mention pumps as they are expensive - around 2k for a pump and 1.5k for comsumables per year - but I have decided to make a fuss and get one. I went to my gp and said look, I've been in casualty twice this year for passing out from hypos. My diabetes nurse said you have to prove you have bad hypos and ideally that you have lost your awareness.
I just find that tho lantus is great its not flexible enough, I need much less at night than in the day, and I can't change it enough. Having talked to a lot of T1s in the US I reckon a pump sorts it out. So I am obsessed! I am just trying to work out how to get one. I did 3 days of continuous glucose monitirong the other day which is v similar and I didn't mind it.
Where are you living? I am in Somerset. That is great you've taken in your niece - that sounds lovely. How old is she?

haha! just looked it up on the web. probably have not been offered it because they are expensive.
looks like it would be handy though - easy to deliver insulin rather that endlessly stabbing yourself with needles.I like that idea. surely you would still have to do the thumb prick tests anyway? I wish they would get that sorted as i hate doing the bloods
don't fancy sleeping with the pump though- be a bit of a pain i think

cremolaturkeywishbone · 23/12/2006 23:44
