After some advice re. ds cough

Ds is 6, had croup as a baby and other than the usual coughs and colds is healthy. Sunday pm he said he had a sore throat which I put down to him singing in the xmas play everyday last week. Mon 6am he wakes me up saying it was hurting him to breathe, was very wheezy and upset. Tried calming him down and couldn't he got so back I nearly called 999. Calmed him down and his breathing slowed. Took him to docs on advice from NHS direct and his chest is clear. Then Mon pm he starts with a cough. He has gone up and down since then but is being sick after coughing at night. He is wheezy at night but says it doesn't hurt and he can breathe fine.
Sorry this is long, was trying to keep it brief. His cough sounds like his croup cough but could be a whooping noise (have never understood the diff.)
Should I take him back to the docs after feeling like I wasted their time on Mon?

Its very frustrating when the doctors just don't seem to care when your child has a cough. They just see a cough as a good thing as its the body's way of clearing the lungs. Us as parents do not agree and when my children get coughs even when they are sleeping I spend the night sat watching them to make sure they don't choke or something. Both mine suffer as they have mild asthma which is brought on worse when they have a cold.

I totally sympathise.

Yes you should, because then you can either put your mind at rest or get the help you need.
I've put off going to dcs sev. times for smilar reasons and then when I've finally gone, found dd's had ear infections, tonsilitis etc. or or actually been ok.

Thanks for the replies, I think I will take him tomorrow if I can get past the receptionist. I'm so grateful for MN in situations like this, as a single mum who doesn't like decision making it helps to have someone elses view. I am thinking of recording what his breathing/coughing is like tonight on my mobile so I can show the doc how bad he is at night.
I also want him to get better for xmas day, the last 2 he hasn't eaten xmas dinner because he has been ill.

Give him chewy vits, mine are so much healthier since taking these. I swear by them.
