adult onset asthma

Can this start / be triggered by a virus/ bacterial infection?

I've had abs and steroids now but there's still an odd wheeze. Not sure how long to let it rattle on. Became ill 2 months ago and GP said "small patch of pneumonia". A colleague was quite concerned as her asthma was adult onset and symptoms seemed similar.

Glad you are feeling better.

I just wanted to update- had follow up appt with asthma nurse today. Asthma confirmed (as I know know due to feeling lots better, esp in the mornings and peak flow always between 400-440: no shit Sherlock!!! )

I have a plan, reducing clenil to x2 100 twice a day and salbutamol as and when. I guess it might change if I find things tricky.

Still not sure what triggers are other than smoke and viruses. I've had a couple of mild wheeze cough episodes where salbutamol really helps. But nurse told me hers was lime cordial! So who knows!

So thanks for your patience and advice!

It's great that you have a confirmed diagnosis Clarella :)

It's better to have a higher dose of maintenance therapy rather than a low dose + tons of reliever therapy (salbutamol) though, so do bear that in mind. Over-use of salbutamol is associated with worse outcomes for patients so if you find that you need salbutamol often then you might benefit from a higher dose of Clenil.

I also had some slightly over heamaglobin scores over the last couple years. I've been quite unwell too. I now realise that probably explains those scores as more blood cells were made to compensate.

It's not major reactive (brittle?) asthma by any means, and I don't have 'allergies' as never have any issue around animals, hay etc. Possibly chemicals and maybe slightly house dust. I can't work out if exercise is an issue (as I haven't done much yet!). I did manage my first swim on Sunday and didn't notice anything.

I ended up being diagnosed with asthma after a dose of pneumonia. I took me nearly a year to actually go an see a doctor about my concerns though Blush I would describe myself as a very mild asthma, have only ever been prescribed the brown inhaler once, but do keep one for emergencies.
I find the switch between seasons very hard, going from warm to cold and then back again. Having a cold makes it so much worse as well, but for the most part it's totally under control and doesn't bother me.

Thanks lacountessa. I was told to come in if using more than 2-3 times a week. And establish if I was a) really needing it when I used it and b) if needed more clenil.

I think I get confused about 'when I need it'.

Very clear episode in Monday. Other days I just seem to be a 'bit coughy'.

I did call asthma uk who thought maybe a long term reliever might help?

I never know if I'm over thinking it!

I only occasionally hit 440. As in once a week!

It (asthma after infection) seems more common than I thought deedee. Actually I think that might have been the issue over the last few weeks now you mention it, from warm to cold etc.

I think some 440 days have been very nice and sunny! But also I just think I wake up feeling better.

Sleep is a million times better!

I do think there's been signs since ds was born, and occasionally before. I have always struggled with coughs and long lingering ones, similar pattern to how this one became on the end but not as severe.

Itchy chin is definitely something I get during these coughs.
