Do you get headaches or migraines?

I had a spate of migraines last week and went to both the doc and chirpractor. Both of them recommended taking 500mgs of magnesium a day. Spoke to chiropractor again this morning and he said that both he and the doc were at the same seminar here in Hungary in March and a headache specialist from the States was speaking at it and he recommended the magnesium supplements. They have both recommended it to patients with good results.

So just thought I would pass it on as it is not something I have heard of before.

Thanks for that - I get terrible persistant headaches and migraines.

Is that to take 500mgs everyday regardless or when you get headaches?

Twinkie1 · 19/12/2006 11:17

Will go and get some this afternoon - I have terrible migraines - have been hospitalised with them as the side effects are so appalling - last really bad one I had I was pregnant with DS and ended up having a CT or MRI scan - the head one - scan as they thought I had had a stroke.

Actually will email DH and get him to get me some on the way home!!

what side effects do you get twinkie? With some of my worst I've had blurred vision/lights in my eyes, been uinable to speak properly and lost the feeling in my arm/hand. It has never been taken any further though...

onzephyr - doc told me to take 500 mgs per day for a few months - every day.

I get the exact same effects zephyr, it's frightening! For headaches I take syndol and it works. Thanks for the tip Buda!

I have something called dysphasia (i think thats it or something like that), throw up, get tunnel vision, diziness and numbness and swelling of my hands and sometimes my ips and tongue feels swollen although they aren't.

Sometimes I get all fo the symptoms and no pain which is quite scarey.

Will definatley try with the magnesium though - anything really as am now on nasal sprays which are horrible.

SantasPersonalClown · 19/12/2006 12:25

Do you think it'll work for me? I've just been diagnosed with cluster headaches and am currently on co-codamol to start with.
Where could I get magnesium suppliments?

BudaBauble · 19/12/2006 13:13

I already had some that I had bought in Holland & Barrett.

It's got to be worth a try - can't hurt.

Thanks for this, it has to be worth a try. I tend to get hormonal headaches, relating to to my cycle with the odd migraine thrown in for good measure.

So... 500mg a day? I think I will give it a go. I get a dreadful migraine about once every six months these days. I get loss of vision, flashing lights.. the works.

Although when I took the pill I got one every 3 or 4 weeks, which was scary.

Magnesium sounds worth a year's experiment though.

Kbear · 19/12/2006 14:00

I get hormonal headaches which are awful since stopping the pill. Got one now which I am trying to ignore. DH gets migraines, face numbness, pain, extreme exhaustion. Usually out of nowhere too. No regular pattern. Will get him some - thanks for the tip.

I'm just adding my thanks for the tip about the magnesium. I've posted on a previous thread about my symptons. They're just like Twinkie1's and there's another MN-etter called zoeuk1 who gets them just like me too.
I was once told by a doctor that everytime I have an attack and get the numbness-thing, it's like a stroke and each time is very lucky when the numbness goes as there is always a very, very slight chance that the feeling may not return.....I was told this years and years ago and can remember this conversation very vividly!
I've just been prescribed Rizotriptin by my doc's; does anyone else take this?
