Oooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

My tooth is absolutely agonising - i chipped it a while ago, put off going to the dentist, chip turned into gaping hole - developed phobia of dentists and left it too long - eventually had to go as it was excruciating - dentist gave me temporary filling and had to go back when baby was born as I couldnt have the treatment - that was back in July and now temporary filling fell out hole worse, now only have the outside of the tooth and the pain is so bad ibuprofen and paracetamol combo doesnt touch it - i want to cry as Im soooo scared - this isnt like me normally Im a "just get on with it" person towards pain but Im really really dreading going to dentist - I know I have to but feel I just cant

I know how you feel, I've been there too and sympathise immensely, but you must must must get it seen to. This will only get worse otherwise. Make an appointment just to sit in the chair and talk to the dentist, lean back and let him or her look in your mouth and touch your teeth - that's all. Take a friend to hold your hand if you want (or to stroke your feet - sounds daft, but can help). And then go again to get the work done. Take the friend along again if you want to. Not being bashful about my fear helps a lot - if I go alone and feel the need for comfort I just hold onto the nurse's hand, no matter if I've been told I can't (which has happened) and they always reciprocate.

I find that have a personal stereo with comedy tapes helps, plus a simple set of signals to communicate with the dentist: I can concentrate on the distracting tape because he touchs my shoulder to attract my attention if necessary, and if I raise my hand it means 'stop at once and let me speak'.

I have been there and am at the temporary filling stage.Absolutely terrified of dentists but am going to see this through as the pain was unbearable.Get something with codeine, put clove oil on it and go to the dentist asap!

Look, its ALRIGHT! It DOESN'T HURT THESE DAYS. The hardest part is picking up the phone and making the appointment. If you haven't done so already pick up the phone first thing in the morning (too late to-day now). Believe me, it won't hurt and you will feel sooo good when you come out and its done with.Just get the appointment made. One foot in front of the other...

Go go, honestly I put off going to dentist for 10 yrs due to irrational lazy ass fear, when I went finally I needed two fillings, I never felt a thing, the injection was painfree and I was amazed at how painfree the whole thing was, key is to relax..
Good luck xx

Fear put me off going to the dentist for several years in my late teens/early 20s. When I did eventualy go I was so impressed I decided to become one myself

Its impossible that its going to be pain free - my tooth is gaping open!

My fear has come from a trip to the dental hospital a year or so ago, I went for what I thought would be a filling as it was really really hurting - ended up having to get it removed, the aneasthetic didnt work well and i kept passing out, they kept having to lower the chair and give me glucose - then they had to cut my gum open and cut some of my jaw out or something - rather traumatic and Im very scared the same fate lies waiting for me this time!

When I was told tht I would have to have all my wisdom teeth out I was a complete 'virgin' - I'd never had a tooth out, never had a general anaesthetic, hadn't been in hospital since I was about 4, etc, so I was very worried and asked around. All I got was horror stories, so eventually I told my so-called friends to shut up, I didn't want to hear any more about their experiences unless they were good! And when I had my teeth out it was just about as good an experience as any operation could be.

Unfortunately, the horro story happened to you, so you can't just tell someone to shut up about it. But truly, it won't be that bad again! (It couldn't!) Tell your dentist what happened, they will understand. And you'll have your DP to hold your hand.

Until then, have you tried Oil of Cloves? You apply it directly to the cavity on a cotton bud - don't get any on your tongue - and it eases the pain.
