Hi,
I've had tonsillitis for a few days now and am taking penicillin for it.
Will I have to turn down all invites for baby and toddler xmas gatherings?

I've always thought of it as a localised throat infection (as opposed to strep throat which is very contagious, but they don't often make a distinction in UK). However after 24-48 hours of ab's you wouldn't be contagious anyway.

Hi archiesmummy - you have my sympathies - going through the same thing at the moment.

According to the NHS website.

'The best way to avoid tonsillitis is to avoid close contact with people who have the viral or bacterial infections that lead to the development of the condition. This includes avoiding sharing toothbrushes and eating or drinking utensils, and keeping a high level of hygiene (for example, frequent hand-washing).'

To me that sounds like you need pretty intimate contact with someone to give it to them.

Hope you feel better soon. xx

poor you i had this two weeks ago and was sooo poorly
i went to the docs and he wouldn;t give me anything for it and told me i had only had it four days and that if i still had it on thurs to come back and he would think about giving me something (this was on monday)
i burst into tears and eventually he gave me some and said not to start using them until thurs
of course i started with them straight away

but lucky me no one else in the house caught it, i think you can just be prone to these things

expatinscotland · 18/12/2006 09:59

It's usually a secondary infection.

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 18/12/2006 09:59

No, not if you are taking antibiotics. It will have passed it's infectious stage now.

I've had ursula the mouth ulcer for 8 days now and instead of getting better it's now HUGE. I don't thinking putting bi-carbonate of soda on it was such a good idea.

fortyplus · 18/12/2006 10:01

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell - OUCH!!!!

DumbledoresFairy · 18/12/2006 10:02

Cliff do you name all your ailments? What would you call genital herpes?

fortyplus · 18/12/2006 10:03

archiesmummy - if you feel well enough then go - tonsillitis is 99% always a secondary infection - I'd be willing to bet that it followed on from a cold, didn't it?

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 18/12/2006 10:04

Gertrude

DumbledoresFairy · 18/12/2006 10:04

Thats OK! I nearly thought you would call it something else.

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 18/12/2006 10:05

Gerald?

DumbledoresFairy · 18/12/2006 10:09

No, my name! Or did I never tell you it? Don't post it here please.

archiesmummy · 18/12/2006 10:18

Thank you all for your advise and sympathy. Yes I did have a persistent cold (2 weeks) first and now this painful sweeling that doesn't seem to go away... {sad}

I'm glad I don't have to stay in as well.

The positive thing of course is that I'm not hungry and even if I was it's too painful to eat, so maybe that baby flaber will finally go away, just in time for christmas pigging out LOL {fgrin}
