Going through a chest infection WITHOUT a temp - a good thing or bad?

I went to see a homeopath with ds. Amongst other things she asked me, just like the doctors always do, whether he has a temperature with his chest infections - he never has. The homeopath seemed to feel that this was not really a good thing, that maybe he should run a temperature to "clear" himself more.

Any truth in that?

I thought a temperature was the body's way of fighting infection too. I have nothing to back this up though.

"Your blood and lymphatic system make white blood cells, which fight infection. When you have an infection you make lots and lots of these cells. They work faster and faster to try and fight off the infection. The increase in these white blood cells affects the part of your brain that controls your body temperature (the hypothalamus). This makes your body heat up, causing a fever"

Yes but what does that mean for a baby who is ill with an infection without a temperature - that his body isn't fighting the infection? Or what?

I had glandular fever . . . with no fever.

I eventually got a slight one, about 38 degrees. That was it.

I had a lung infection - pneumonia. Didn't get much of a fever w/that, either. It was a complication of influenza.

I had Flu last week ( yes Flu, not a cold) and I had no fever, but felt utter shite all week.

A fever is a sign though that your body is trying hard to re-regulate itself and fight off infections.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 18/12/2006 09:33

I guess that could be one interpretation. The quote I found below seems to imply that the temperature is a symptom of the body fighting infection rather than a means to fight infection IYSWIM. No temperatre could mean that the body's not fighting it or that the increased white cells aren't affecting the hypothalamus I guess?? Do you regularly take his temperature - do you know what's normal for him?

Hopefully a doctor will come along in a moment!

tiredemma · 18/12/2006 09:56

think that this says the same, more or less??

Fever, also known as pyrexia, is a medical symptom which describes an increase in internal body temperature to levels which are above normal (37 degrees Celsius, 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit). An adaptive mechanism, fever is the body's reaction to pathogens; it attempts to raise core body temperature to levels which will denature, debilitate, or kill the pathogen.

( a pathogen is an infectious agent btw, I have learnt something so far on my nursing degree!)

My ds also has no temp

My dd was very hot but not temp. Dr gave her antibiotics after 2 weeks because her breathing was becoming difficult. She is only 6.5 months old.
