HELP, My childs teeth have disappeared under her gums. What's going on?

Can anyone offer advice? My 14mth old has been showing signs of teething over the past few days (dribbling, restless at night, irritable, hot, rosy cheeks). She has had me up a lot in the past 3 night which is very unusual. Then yesterday I noticed that her top teeth looked smaller, like the gum was moving down over them. By last night none of her teeth at the top could be seen. Her mouth was really sore and she couldn't get to sleep. I gave her pain relief and took her to A&E. I was give ibuprofen to reduce the swelling and pain but it didn't help. The gums look the same this morning, totally covering the top teeth. I think the bottom gum is a little swollen too. She has all her teeth except the very back molars and her canines. She won't have ice or anything cold in her mouth (which might help the swelling). Will take her to GP and maybe dentist tomorrow, but I want to know if this is normal. Has anyone else experienced this? It looks weird and very sore.

I have absolutely no experience in people - but young horses sometimes suffer from something like this. It used to be called Lampas - but is now believed to be a short lived condition with no effect on the health of the horse apart from discomfort and difficulty eating!
It is always worth getting inflammation investigated, but I hope that this is reassurance of a sort! (I realise your dd is not a horse....)

my mum said that when i was a baby my teeth cut the gum, and then the gum grew back over the teeth which meant they had to cut through again. not sure if its normal but sounds similar?!

I would take her to a dentist, not the GP. Chances are the gp will only tell you to go the dentist anyway.

I have been a dental nurse for some years and haven't come across this. I would recommend dental reassurance.

Thanks for your replies. I took her to GP Monday morning. Was swiftly told to take her to dentist as GP had no clue and said it wasn't her domain. Took her to emergency dentist who said I should take her to GP!!! She said that she hadn't seen anything like it before that she thought DD needed antibiotics but didn't know what to prescribe for one so small!!! Went back to GP (raging and fed up, very tired from lack of sleep) she agreed to give her antibiotics which DD has been doing her best to avoid. By this point her gums were bleeding all the time. I took her to another dentist following day who was more insightful. She said she thought that it was a difficult erruption of her canines causing this swelling all over her mouth and that she had seen it before. She said to keep going with antibiotics as they were now clearly infected. Daughter is now terrified of doctors and dentists from all the probing and is also very distrusting as to what I'm putting in her mouth. She and we have lost much sleep, it's been awful. But it is improving. She is much better in herself and last night slept in her own bed. High temp has gone. She is eating again. Def. on mend but gums are still covering most of her top teeth. I can see lumps on her lower canines this morning. Think infection is probably gone but gum hasn't receeded which is worrying (sounds like your thing Loopylopey). Going to take her back to dentist today. What a weird one!

That sounds horrid. Lots and lots of sympathy! I'm glad the dentist could say what it was though.

SchneeBallFight · 21/12/2006 09:13

poor wee soul - I hope things go back to normal soon. xxx

brimfull · 21/12/2006 09:36

god sounds horrendous!poor thing, surprised they didn't take photos for the dental textbooks!

009 · 21/12/2006 11:09

Also suprised photos weren't taken. Though I think they were just glad to get her out there was so much screaming. Hope she doesn't develop a phobia for the dentist chair....
