I can see it but it's past picking out with fingers. Do I need to take him to A&E to have it removed or will it work it's way out on it's own??

can you use some tweezers to extract it?

MerryChristmasPANDAGHappyNewYe · 15/12/2006 16:42

A and E definitely. just done First Aid course and this was the recommendation. unless you can tickle nose and encourage a sneeze to get it out. do not poke at it! hope it isn't too painful for the wee mite.

Gingeme · 15/12/2006 16:43

Tweezers might push it up fruther. Try asking him to 'blow' it out while covering the other nostril.

TheBlonde · 15/12/2006 16:43

you need one of those snot sucker things for babies

WigWamBam · 15/12/2006 16:47

I had to take dd to A&E when she shoved a couple of raw peas up her nose. They can do it pretty quickly and painlessly.

You could try closing the other nostril and blowing gently into his mouth - it might dislodge it - but if it's right up at the top it probably won't help.

Some pharmacists have the right kind of equipment to deal with this kind of thing, but otherwise take him to A&E - don't try to do it on your own.

crazycanuck · 15/12/2006 16:49

tried to make him sneeze with pepper, he just screamed! he doesn't understand what to do when I say 'blow'. he doesn't seem too bothered by it, rubs the side of his nose, it's streaming like mad so maybe it'll eventually 'wash' out?? will attempt feather tickling to sneeze...

I spent the night in hospital with DS when he put Fimo up his nose - they ended up giving him a general anaesthetic in the morning they never found the fimo and assumed it must have been swallowed but they wouldn't risk leaving it in there. We started off finding it funny until we realised how seriously they were all taking it (I thought they over reacted a bit).

dinny · 15/12/2006 16:56

keep trying to post this - third time lucky!

roll tissue into point and tickle up nostril without raisin up it - he should sneeze it out (hopefully!)

spinasnowflake · 15/12/2006 16:59

Go to A and E. DO not try to remove it yourself. My sis did something similiar when little and dr said THE worst thing mum and dad could have done is try to extract it themselves. Dr's don't have shakey hands and are less emotionally involved if LO gets upset.

WigWamBam · 15/12/2006 17:01

It won't wash out.

Don't put anything up his nose, even something to tickle it - you might push it further up.

Don't try and deal with this yourself. If you have a local pharmacist still open, take him there and see if they can deal with it. Otherwise A&E.

spinasnowflake · 15/12/2006 17:02

Sorry to butt in again. I am a local pharmacist and I'd just send you to A and E.

My dd was at my mums house after her mother and toddlers group. She sauntered up to my mum and said "I have a spiders eye up my nose!" and grinned a huge grin. Mum ignored her but after saying it for the 4th or 5th time my mum asked her what she meant. She had in fact shoved a googly eye up her nose which had been the eye on the spider she had made at M&T.

She came home from the hospital right as rain and told me she had been to "New Yorkhill".

kid · 15/12/2006 17:09

DS once told me he had stuck a cheerio up his nose. I didn't believe him at first but he kept telling me. When I looked, sure enough there was a cheerio. I got him to blow his nose while I held the other nostril and it shot out at top speed!

Sounds like you will have to take him to A&E if he won't blow his nose. I wouldn't laeve it though, good luck.

crazycanuck · 15/12/2006 17:11

well it's off to the dreaded a&e....see y'all in 6 hours!

DS2 did this a month or so ago quite alot..peas or raisons. Mostly I got them out myself (bad mummy) but, unknown to us, one stayed up there a few days I think and finally came out after he started picking his nose lots and then sneezed and out it shot.

theXmaskedposter · 15/12/2006 17:18

dd had a corn kernel stuck up hers ... wondered why she was breathing a bit funny and had a quick investigation.

Had a bit of a double take as I saw 'yellow' and not much else - dh had to remove with tweezers! Not sure how long it had been up there - but was still plump and juicy looking so I think it was a same day job!

she was nearly 2 at the time too ... must be an age thing ...

Ours put a hairclip up there. What's worse is it was never found, even with Xrays. We could initially see it, but in triage they failed to get it out, she cried and then snorted it up to God knows where.

Good luck in A&E (echoes into empty room)

Mercy · 15/12/2006 17:27

Don't know if you've gone yet but try this first before you go to A&E.

Close the unblocked nostril by placing your finger on it and push it inwards.

Still keeping the unblocked nostril closed, blow hard (short shart breaths) into your child's mouth, may take several attempts, but the raisin should shoot down and out.

dd shoved a bit of gravel up her nose and this is what the A&E nurse asked us to do. It's called the parents/parental kiss.

If it doesn't come out you must go to a GP/A&E. Good luck!!

Mercy · 15/12/2006 17:29

shart = sharp.

The main danger is when a foreign object gets inhaled into the lungs, rather than the windpipe then stomach

achristmasshoop · 15/12/2006 17:50

My dad once stuck a piece of coal up his nose, and according to the family, his aunt got it out with a poker!
We also dared a girl at school to put two m and m peanuts up her nose! When they eventually came out, one nostril was blue and the other was red She then proceeded to try drinking orange up her nose through a straw

crazycanuck · 15/12/2006 20:41

mission accomplished! thanks everyone, your stories certainly made me chuckle! hopefully now he's made a connection between shoving things up his nostrils and a trip to the dreaded doctor.... we can only hope eh!

So glad to hear that it turned out ok! Hope you didn't have to wait the usual 4 hours in a waiting room full of vomiting children.
