Dd may have glue ear

Hi, dd (16months) has ANOTHER ear infection. The doctor said she doesn't think her ears drain properly. We need to get her checked again when this infection is gone and then they may refer her to the ENT hospital.
All I know about glue is ear is that its to do with a build up of all the viral, coldy mucus in her tubes which then keeps getting infected. Is that about right? Also I know that sometimes kids get grommits fitted to help open the tubes.

My dd is quite grumpy, clingy and wingey and definatly doesn't just go off and play as much as my son did. I'm now beginning to think that she's like this as she's so often in pain.

My ds1 is 7 suffers with glue earand has done since he was a toddler.. When he has a cold his nose is never runny as it all drains into his middle ear.

After a cold he is really quite deaf for a week or two. Fortunately it hasn't affected his speech and he hasn't suffered socially or school wise and because of this the consultant said we could avoid grommets. Instead we have to encourage him to blow his nose hard every morning (a bit tricky with your dd as she's still little) the popping as air is pushed along his tubes is as good as having grommets fitted. I mistakenly believed grommets let the fluid drain out but apparently they are to let air in.

dd(5) has just been diagnosed as having glue ear. We have spent the past week with lots of decongestants (vaporiser, Olbas oil, nose drops), putting her head of mattress on a slope with pillow under mattress, full dose of Nurofen to help inflammation, cool bedroom at night. seh definitely is finding it hard to hear and had earache from the pressure of fluid in the ear drum. We may try Cranial Osteopathy over Christmas before she goes back to dr in January to see if it has drained at all. btw it is very common among young chidlren as their tubes are so narrow and horizontal gravity alone does n't work. The fluid doesn't necessarily become infected but any colds can cause addiotonal build up and aggarvate it, hence the preventative measures above !.hth

Hi, Thanks. Well that sounds different to my dd as her nose is like a tap. Could it be that her nose 'drains' the nose fluid but her ears don't drain their mucas/fluid?

Hi Lizs. We have already been doing all of that for about a year each time she has a cold. We do snuffle babe on her chest, karvol or olbas oil, sudafed plug ins. You name it, we've tried it!!
Oh dear.

Interestingly until last winter we had dd's cot then bed inclined as she had reflux and would be sick if she coughed a lot but hadn't done that this year as she seemd ot grown out of it - and then she got an infection and has been left with the fluid. Up until October she'd only had 2 or 3 ear infections. Definitely recommend inclining her bed if you aren't already.
