My ds's temp is 39.7, should I be worried?

My ds is not well today, he's chesty, has diarohea (sp?) and his temperature is now 39.7. He's not eating but has drunk well in the last 24 hours. At what temperature do you think it's advisable to take him down to the docs, I don't really want to drag him from his bed just yet. He's 6 BTW.

Call NHS direct. I found them really good when DS had the same temperature. They told me to physically cool him down - strip him off to nappy, damp cloth, etc. BUT he didn't have any other symptoms, so if I were you, I'd be prepared for that trip to the GP. Why don't you call the surgery anyway to see if they have any appts why don't you? That'll might help make the decision for you.

Thanks, I'm onto NHS direct now, he screamed at me when I mentioned taking him down to the docs.

Keep us posted, woozy!

DD1 is down again w/a chest ailment. And Santa is coming to nursery today.

We didn't tell her, though.

Dophus · 11/12/2006 12:40

Have you given him Calpol or neurofen? If it's not coming down then I would take him in.

Mercy · 11/12/2006 12:41

Was just about to say the same as Dophus!

Yes I've give him Ibuprofen but still temp up. NHS direct explained that it's quite common for children to get a fever as high as 40 with cold/flu symptoms. She advised to alternate with paracetamol as well which should do the trick, if temp persists I'm to call back.

Hope your dd is better soon expat, poor thing missing santa Looks like my ds will miss panto trip with school tomorrow, although he wasn't too bothered about going away, so not missing out on much.

Do alternate w/paracetomal, woozy. Just the usual dosage for 6+ on the bottle.

It really helped w/DD1's temp as well.

It's so scary when they spike temps like that .

Just picking up on this, my ds is 18 months, similar symptoms. He's had a temp all day and Calpol doesn't seem to be helping (dh can't find the calprofen!) - how long would you let a high temp persist before going to the GP?

2HappyTurtleDoves · 12/12/2006 16:45

Trib sorry to hear ds unwell. I think it would depend on other symptoms, not just the temp, like if I was worried it was on his chest etc. Have you tepid sponged him to help bring the temp down ( can imagine ds's reaction to that!!)
