Babies Belly Button normal or not? Plus nighttime screaming

DS is 4 1/2 weeks old, the midwife tugged his cord off about 3 days old and it got a bit yucky (i do belive thats the medical term ) Anyway i cleaned it regurly with cooled boiled water and it cleared up, now hes got something that looks like a pink worm sticking out of it! It was tine and the HV said it was just a bit of tissue that would dry up in a few days, it hasn't and it's getting bigger and bigger and quite purple. I have also found some yellow gunge in his nappy where it goes over his bellybutton sp i figure its leaking again.

He has a lump under the skin behind his bellybutton which bulges when he screams. He is really screaming in pain at night times to point he's turing blue, it is stomach ache as hes drawring his legs right up. Im not sure if it's colic or this BB button thing, i have been giving him Infacol religiously at every feed for several days and he does bring up wind not to badly so not sure what up!

would get it checked by gp as there is a powder you can get to help with infections as DS had to have it as his cord fell off quite early.

Rodeohoho · 11/12/2006 10:57

What was the MW tugging his cord for?! Poor mite Doesn't sound normal, but I'm sure it's nothing serious. Do you think the lump behind could be a hernia? Although I'd have thought the HV would have picked that up.... I would take him to the doctor to have it checked

Charleesawmummykissingsanta · 11/12/2006 11:15

I thought it was quite harsh for the midwife to tug it off! i certainly made me wince! She said it was ready so gave it a sharp pull and it broke off.

I'd take him straight to the gp tbh as it may be an umbilical hernia which is nothing to worry about but something that needs to be put right.

Charleesawmummykissingsanta · 11/12/2006 11:19

Thanks will take him to tonights surgery.

this sounds like a granuloma - ALL of my girls had one

nothing to be worried about but a pain as you have to keep taking them to get it 'burned' away (painless) with silver nitrate

EniDeepMidwinter · 11/12/2006 11:21

umbilical granuloma

Charleesawmummykissingsanta · 11/12/2006 11:27

Yes that sound like it, doesn't say anything about the lump behind it though so maybe they are not connected?
I will have to ask the G.P, god i swear im gonna get a council tax bill if im in that place alot longer!!

regarding a herniated belly button my DD has one and it is just being monitored as it doesnt cause undue discomfort. I had one as a child that was eventually operated on when I was 7. If it is the other thing then that sounds a little more urgent as hopefully something can be given to help the discomfort.

Charleesawmummykissingsanta · 11/12/2006 17:17

Thanks for your replys just got back from g.p he does have both a heria (which will be monitored) and some granulation which they will quaterise when they have order the stuff in.

Thanks again

hi there, my daughter had that problem with her belly button, the GP tied it off with a silk thread and then dabbed siver nitrate solution on it, did the trick nicely. hope it works for you too. Ax

PinkTinsel · 18/12/2006 14:42

omg! i'd report that mw tbh. she absolutely should NOT have tugged it off and i'd be concerned that she's going to do a baby damage if she does that alot.

the lump sounds like a umbilical hernia. afaik most go away of their own accord but you'd better get the gp to have a look to be on the safe side

PinkTinsel · 18/12/2006 14:44

whoops, posted before reading through again!

glad the gp was able to help and hope the cauterisation (sp?) goes well

alexw · 18/12/2006 14:48

With the granulation I sprinkled table salt on DD's - it dried up and fell off over night.

Hello, can I pick this thread up again to ask about the hernia? My 6 week old's has gone from being big and soft to being firm and squelchy and seriously the size of a knob. I showed my dad, a GP, via iChat, and he says it's fine, and is a hernia, but didn't seem to think I needed to do anything. I'm seeing my own GP on the 26th, but wonder if I should see her before then. I'm alarmed by the poster who says hers was operated on when she was SEVEN! How does it look now, by the way? And what would treatment now involve?

macneil · 10/01/2007 19:33

Oh, my dad now reassures me that they almost always go within the year. I just feel I'll go to my GP here and she'll say 'you neglectful hag! What is that coming out of your daughter? A COCK??'
