Usually have fairly light periods, came on today and suddenly this evening I'm going through a tampon every half hour and loosinglarge clots, one massive one. Sorry if too much info, but a bit concerned.

With v heavy periods do you loose clots?

Has last baby 3yrs ago, never had anything like this, should I be worried?

Oh, I feel fine and just normal period pain.

If it is very different to what you are used to I would phone NHS direct and check.

I have very heavy periods and often get lots of clots, but usually are a bit painful.

SmileysPeople · 08/12/2006 22:11

So blood clots not totally unusual with periods?
I can't believe I've been having periods for over 20yrs now and am discovering new things. asking period questions makes me feel 13 again!

I always get some period pain, which I do have but no more than usual. I was just rather taken aback by the huge clot, presumed someting was wrong.

Thanks Armadillo.

Anyone else reassuring me this happens would also be gratefully received.

I do recall a clot bigger than the old 50p is cause for concern and needs to be looked at.

The woman not the clot!

How big was it?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 08/12/2006 22:41

If its totally out of the ordinary then you really ought to get it checked. Ring NHS direct or out of hours GP.

I have v heavy periods but this is 'normal' for me so not a concern.

If you are going to seek medical advice - use pads if you have to be able to show how much blood you are losing (yes, yuck, i know - but necessary)

SmileysPeople · 08/12/2006 22:46

Do you get clots VVV? The biggest clot was about size of a sauasage. (not a nice comparison I know couldn't think of anything else)
I keep swaying between worrying and then reluctant to follow it up....

Not unusual to lose clots. If you feel otherwise well i would not pjhone NHS direct. Have you recently had a coil removed or come off pill? Are you sure you could not be having a misscarriage?

SmileysPeople · 08/12/2006 22:54

Not been keeping track of periods Mears so don't know if I'm late. Miscarriage did occur to me but it's unlikely I think.
If clots not unusual, I think I'll wait and see what happens. it was just a shock to me. I think I've got off lightly all these years with my light periods.

Piece of advice - always take a note of when your period starts. Very useful info for example when you have a smear or get pregnant in the future. It is helpful to know the date of your last period. I have always marked mine in my diary since I started at 13 yrs - now 46!

SmileysPeople · 08/12/2006 22:59

I know mears good advice. I always used to know. All those years trying not to get pg and then yrs trying to get pg it was important to know. Now it doesn't seem to matter. Actually I know where I was when I last came on so can go and check....will be back.

I think that if you are having a period that is very different to normal then you need to go and see your GP, clots or no clots. You might not really want to do it (and who does, especially with all the waiting around with young children in tow) but it would be better to make sure that nothing untoward's happening that needs to be sorted/nipped in the bud now.

SmileysPeople · 08/12/2006 23:07

No period right on time, just checked, so think I can rule out miscarriage.

I just want someone to say 'oh yeah I have huge clots all the time, lucky you to get away with it until now.' Anyone?

I have clots all the time. Saw GP and got precribed tranexamic acid which is brill.

SmileysPeople · 08/12/2006 23:39

Have been goggling and seems to be blood clots are normal, but as ever with the internet some sites said advice should be sought.
i think as I feel fine I'll wait and see what happens if iy continues I'll go see my Gp for reassurance.
Thanks all. It was good to have somewhere to turn immediately tonight when this happend. Much apreciated.

No advice I'm afraid, but I hope you're OK SP. I think I'd get checked out by GP, just for peace of mind.

cece · 09/12/2006 00:22

I have heavy periods - changing extra strong tampon every 30 - 60 mins normal for me for the heaviest days. And yes I do get clots, but no bigger than a 50 p piece. Most are about the size of a penny or smaller.
