There's a lad in DS class who is similar. I think he was born with 4 kidneys, but all too small, 2 plus a bit more had to be removed as they were going diseased. That meant much medical attention when he was tiddly and had major surgery when he was barely 5 & he'll have to be careful for life.

BUT, to look at him you'd never know. He is almost 7 now, runs around, climbs, kicks a ball, has a laugh. But gets out of a lot of P.E. lessons.

funkadelic, the contact sport thing is just to protect his remaining kidney - obviously don't want anything to happen to it! Not quite the same thing but my dd1 has no usable vision in one eye (ie it works but the brain ignores it because the vision is so poor), and we were told not to let her do bungee-jumping in case it had an adverse effect on her good eye and therefore left her partially sighted.

Hiya, I posted on your thread before, as my DS had the same condition as your DS.
It is good news that the cystic kidney has gone already (my ds was 4 before we got the all clear), but I have to say that we were never told that DS would have to avoid all contact sport. Infact one of the questions H asked at the time was "Will he be able to play football?" & we were told it wouldn't stop him playing football and that he would lead a pretty normal life. The only thing they told us was that if he was in an accident & his kidney was damaged, he obviously wouldn't have a spare.
We were told that DS's good kidney would grow 1.5 the size of a normal kidney to compensate for the fact that he only has the one.
Who told you that your DS would not be able to play contact sport?

Do you take DS to see a peadiatrition?
My DS had to see one every six months or so until he was 4 years old.

Thanks for replys, hi pinkchampagne was hoping to find you . Saw Consultant yesterday nothing on left side, right side has overgrown to compensate, has stopped antibiotics is pleased with everything and will only want to see him every year until he is about 4. he has got to go for op in 6 months because left testicle has not and in his opinion will not drop on its own (the two things are quite often linked apparently) but this is routine op no big thing. It was just the comment about no contact sport that worried me slightly, obviously am aware that chances are halved only having the one but also don't want him to miss out and be segregated at school, and if little boys want to play rough and tumble there gonna do it as i'm sure you know!!! What do you think? DH does not want to "wrap him in cotton wool" and my older ds loves football so chances are he will copy.Sorry for rambling on.

Absolutely, I am totally with you, funkadelic! My DS is not the most rough & tumble boy, but he is getting quite into football & I think that's great! I don't treat him any differently at all - he is a normal little boy & I have to remind myself from time to time that he only has the one kidney, as I totally forget about it!

Feel free to CAT me anytime if ever you want to.
