I don't know if this warning about Baby carseats and cot death
has already been posted but I think it bears posting twice, anyway.

i was out christmas shopping and saw loads of babies in their car seats... it got me thinking, you know, if it takes say 20 mins to drive there, and 20 mins to get back, were the parents really only spending 20 minutes doing their shopping?

GoodKingWhimsylas · 08/12/2006 13:53

I sat on a bus a couple of months ago and over heard a lady telling a women she hadn't seen for a while that she had lost her baby to cot death while she was in the car seat. Apparently she fell asleep while out and they left her in it

The poor women clearly needed help as she was just sitting on the bus to get out of the hotel room the council had moved her to since the death

I felt awful as I sat there looking out of the window trying not to let her see my tears

HAving seen a baby go blue because their lungs are all scrunched up in a carseat please please please think about whether you need to put you baby in a carseat before 3m. I know it is not always possible but remember a travel system is not really made for using long term and you have to take into account them time your baby is in the car as well as in the shopping mall.

Try not to travel for more than 20mins at a time in a car before 3m and please don't use a travel system 'just so your baby can see you'. TRavel systems are convienient if your baby is asleep and you don't want to disturb them but I am shocked by the amount of people I see walking around housing estates having put their baby in a travel system just totake them for a walk or on the school run.

I am sorry if that message sounds strong but when my baby went blue in a carseat it was really frightening and with many parents having a travel system I think the risks are much greater than they ever have been.

bambi06 · 09/12/2006 11:24

not only that but i see lots of parents in shopping mall themselves stripped off because its so hot inthere[coats and jumpers off] but they leave their babies with full thick coats on ,hats on, blankets still on!!then they wonder why their babies start complaining..wouldnt you all hot and sweaty and unable to regulate your body temp... there must also be a high risk of cot death here as well..it d rives me potty and i have to bite my lip so many times when i see these tiny por babies over heating!!1

Holy cow!! I'm thanking my lucky stars I've purchased a mutsy that lies back when it's being used outside the car! Maybe soon all seats will follow their lead. That and my Amby will lift SOME of the worry that comes with a baby.

hi littlest boho, i had an amby too, they are BRILLIANT! and a lie-flat car seat, which is slightly more controversial on MN but i couldn't have pictured putting a small baby in a sitting up seat.

sahmtotwo · 09/12/2006 14:31

Hi can you tell me what a Mutsy and a Amby are? Thanks

thelittlestboho · 09/12/2006 21:48

Mutsy's a pram system from Holland and Amby is a baby hammock.Google them and all shall be revealed,LoL.x

Oh my god thats scary. Ds was admitted to hospital earlier in the year on to short stay and a baby a few weeks old was allowed to sleep in car seat all night

TwinkleInSantasEye · 09/12/2006 22:40

We went on holiday to Scotland when DS was 2 months old. He was in the car seat for hours , though we did have very frequent long stops to let him stretch etc. This warning is terrifying. It's always bothered me that I can't see him properly when he's in the car seat.

Personally I hate those travel systems and we deliberately avoided getting one. We always make a point of getting DS out of the car seat as soon as we get where we're going and I very rarely carry him about in it. I have been known to leave him asleep in the car seat for a while though after we've got home - I might rethink that one now.
