'Toddler Tum' - how do I get rid of it?

My DS (12mo) has got the runs - again! He had this a few weeks ago - it went on for 3 weeks (although it felt like 3 years). The Health Visitor told us to talk to our GP; GP said to talk to the Health Visitor.

Last time I:

  • eliminated milk for 36 hours - twice
  • gave plain white toast for breakfast instead of wheatabix
  • stopped all fruit
  • gave mainly bland potato with equally bland chicken or fish, with as few fibrous veggies as possible.

Anyway, the last time everyone implied this was 'completely normal', and referred to it as 'Toddler Tum'. When it finally stopped DH and I rejoiced. But 2 days ago it returned, and I've been doing the same as last time, but it's worse than ever! My washing machine is buckling under the strain.

Any suggestions - if it's really 'normal' - what has everyone else done to resolve it? Is there a child-equivalent medication like Immodium they can have?)

my ds had v runny poos on and off for what seemed like forever. he's nearly 4 now and seems to have grown out of it. i spoke to the HV who said toddler diahorrea (sp?). i found out more from the NHS 'birth to five' book and on the internet. everything i ever read said it's nothing to worry about, we just kept on giving him as healthy a diet as we could.
it never caused me any extra washing tho'. i'm thinking either your ds's is worse, or maybe you could try some different nappies to contain it better??
hth - it's little comfort i know,

Try a yakult every night before bedtime. It seems to ease my two DS's runs.
If it's squirting out of the sides of the nappies, try investing in a couple of real nappy wraps (Bumpy are good) as these have better elastic in the legs ans you can put them over the top of a dispoable for containment.
My old family GP recommended stewed apples? They like it anyway! Tbh, ours went on for so long, I gave up on a special diet in the end as DS got so bored with it. Oh and the runs seemed to coincide with teeth coming through....

My DS has had this on & off for a while. Our pediatrician says just to keep feeding him normally but make sure he has plenty of fluids. Bananas & rice can help too - anything that can cause constipation and as other posters mentioned, cooked apples and live yoghurt.

I went round sterlising everything like a mad woman. That did not help, so I won't bother next time!

Thanks for that - at least I'm starting to think it is relatively normal after all!

I haven't tried the stewed apples, but since he adores fruit anyhow, I'll give that a go!

I've tried various nappies (it normally seems to seep up the back and/or out the legs a bit), so the real nappy pants sound like a good option.

For some reason it hadn't occurred to me that this could be a teething thing - perhaps because it's been on and off for so long... but you're right eldestgirl, it may well be caused by teething. After all, he's only got 6, so he's bound to get some more at some point!

Thanks for the advice - here's to joyful nappy changes!
