Heavy bleeding - urinary or otherwise? Help!

Okay, possible tmi but here goes. I use the depo injection and get heavy bleeding. However, twice in the last fortnight I am certain that I have had blood coming from my urinary tract. Ive been tested for a uti but it was negative. My gp has given me some more abs and is repeating the test. However, both she and another doctor don't believe me when I say it's urinary bleeding and they are sure it's vaginal, and now I'm beginning to doubt myself. How can I tell?

I don't think you can given that they are so close together. I suppose you could look with a mirror, but I imagine it would take a while to see where it was coming from. If you don't have a uti, I would have thought the doctor is probably right...

Thanks for your reply. I don't know, when this has happened I am sure things have felt different. The first time it reminded me of a friend explaining how her dh had tried to pass a clot of blood - I was so shocked when I saw I'd been bleeding too - at that time I had no breakthrough bleed.

Part of me hopes that I am wrong. But part of me wants to be sure in case there is something going on that could be dangerous. Either way I want it sorted.

sorry to hear that...sounds horrible,,if there was blood in your urinary tract , would it show up when tested ??? really hard to tell if blood coming from urethra or vagina.....not sure what to suggest,,,i know you were feeling rundown..maybe there is a low grade infection lurking somewhere,,,,x

mears · 08/12/2006 23:25

Put in a tampon. If it is vaginal bleeding the tampon will have blood on it. If it is urinary you will see bleeding despite tampon.

lulumama · 08/12/2006 23:27

that mears...she is dead clever !!!!

Yes, they can tell if the blood is "in" the urine, or was picked up at exit point so to speak. Make doubly sure they check for blood as well as bacteria nearlythree. You are having a rubbish time, you poor soul Hope it resolves soon.
IME if you get to the passing blood stage in a UTI it is bent-double agonising, so whatever is causing this it is not a UTI/cystitis.

Marina · 08/12/2006 23:28

Or you can do what mears suggested of course

Thank you all so much! My gp said that it couldn't be shown where the blood had come from. I can't do the tampon thing as atm I am having a breakthrough bleed. I'm not in any pain except a little discomfort when peeing - when I pass blood (I think) it feels weird, but not painful. It happens at night, lasts about 6 hrs and then stops.

Why can't you use a tampon with a breakthough bleed? You could use a small regular size.

nearlythree · 08/12/2006 23:39

Sorry, mears, I get your point now. I'm no longer bleeding from the urinary tract (I think). As I said, I get a few pees when I think I am passing blood then it stops. The first occasion was last Monday overnight and the second last night. So I know that any blood is a breakthrough bleed. I am so sure it feels different.

Am very worried as there was talk of a camera to look at my bladder. I can't even cope with a catheter, I needed gas and air to have one put in when I had ds.

Sorry, that should say, any blood atm is a breakthrough bleed.

Am really fed up with this. Am worried I will end up unable to look after the dcs.
