Hi all. Over the past few months these small red spots have appeared on my hands. I now have 5 that I can see and 1 on my leg. They dissapear when pressed and are not itchy. I remember having 1 or 2 for a good few years, but they seem to have become more prominant now that I am pregnant. My doctor seems to think they are the ends of blood vessels but she wasn't sure. They are also bright red. my midwife doesn't know what they are either.
Also, I just had they results of my triple screening test, and although they came back low risk, one test showed that there was a high chemical present to do with the babys growth. I think my midwife said that the baby was small or something like that, (I was a bit in shock at the time!) but that it was common, not a problem and that they would monitor it. Has anyone else had any experience of this, and what does it mean for my baby?
Sorry it is so long!
Thanks anyway, especially if you got this far!

Quootiepie · 08/12/2006 00:03

sorry, not sorru!

CarolSheetTurner · 08/12/2006 00:04

Sorry, achristmasshoop, I have no idea what your symptoms mean. It sounds very odd, can't imagine how they'd be related.

Sorry that's no help at all, but I am listening!

Have a Christmas bump!

mears · 08/12/2006 00:09

achristmassoop - I don't think the 2 things are related at all. We all get various blemishes from time to time. I have a number of bright red pinhead spots that have appeared over the years. They aren't anything in particular. They are a bit like red freckles in a way. They do go away when you press them.

You need to ask your midwife to explain your test to you. I am not sure what test you mean and I am a midwife!

achristmasshoop · 08/12/2006 00:15

It was part of the triple screening test I think mears. I couldn't really take it in because at the time I thought she was telling me something really bad. I think she called it growth retardation or something like that, and it means that the baby isn't growing at the proper rate?
Sorry I can't be more specific.
It's good to know that these spots aren't anything though. They are like little pin pricks as you describe them. I have tried looking on the nhs website, but I'm not really sure what to look for. Hey ho, will stop worrying now though.
Thanks guys.

My dd2 had iugr - inter uretrial growth restriction, which meant that her growth was restricted whilst in the womb.
How far into your pregnancy are you?

achristmasshoop · 08/12/2006 00:59

Nearly 20wks albatros.

It is good that they have picked any problems up this early, it wasn't until about 30 weeks that any problem was noticed, after a routine check up with a different midwife she wasn't happy with the fundus height and so sent me for a scan after alot of worry and weekly scans I was finally induced at 39 weeks, dd was 4lbs 6oz, she was average length but very very skinny and had to go into special care for a few days as she could not maintain her body temperature and had low blood sugar.
She is now 3.6 and perfect in every way she is still very slim / slight but is of average height for her age.

achristmasshoop · 08/12/2006 01:20

That's good to know albatros. My midwife did explain to me that this was sometning to do with a chemical they picked up on with the triple screening, but as I said it didn't really register at the time as I was fearing the worst. I have a scan on Monday, do you think they will be able to tell me more about it?

OP posts:
albatros · 08/12/2006 01:29

I don't know anything about chemicals indicating a small baby but I am sure they will give you more information.
Try not to worry to much, there have been alot of other posts from people on here who have been told their baby is small then go on to have a whooper!
Write down all the questions you have before you go for your scan so that you can rember to ask them all. My mind always went blank with panic / worry whenever I had a scan / appointment

achristmasshoop · 08/12/2006 01:30

Thanks Albatros.

After searching the net I think my baby does have IUGR. I have read up on it, and although the midwife said not to worry about it, there seems something to worry about, should I be worried or not?
I am going to eat a healthy, more balanced diet from now on. Do you think this will help?

hi my ds had fetal growth restrtion and i was monitored closely all through pregnancy, he weghed in at 6lbs 4oz and i was told he was very small for dates, well now he,s 18 6ft 2inches and 12 stone, dont worry and good luck for monday

achristmasshoop · 08/12/2006 22:02

Thanks bubbles. My ds only weighed in at 6lb 6oz when he was born, it's not really that that bothers me, it was mentioned on some of the websites I looked at that IUGR could be an indication of down's syndrome (although I had a nuchal translucencey test and that appeared to be fine and my triple screening came back 'low risk'), cerybal palsy and in some very extreme cases death or mental retardation.
Do you think i'm overreacting, I only got told on monday, but had the tests done around 5 or 6 weeks ago and they didn't call me in for an emergency appointment or anything. My midwife just said that it's nothing to worry about, it's quite common and that they would monitor it.

bubbles4 · 08/12/2006 22:09

if it was anything to worry about you would have seen the specialist right away, listen to your midwife she knows whats what,i know its easy to say but try not to worry and let us know how you get on.

achristmasshoop · 08/12/2006 22:10

Thanks for support guys. Will let you knnow how things go on Monday.

are they really tiny pin prick dots? if so they're burst cappillaries, i have tonnes of them on my arms for some reason, nothing to worry about.

i'm afraid i don't know about the pregnancy question though, sorry!

achristmasshoop · 08/12/2006 22:23

YES!! That's how they start out, but then get slightly bigger! Oh, how exciting, I reckon thats what they are!!!

Hi I was in two minds to warn you off googling / searching iugr last night - I didn't want to put the suggestion in your head !
I wasn't told about iugr I was just told my baby was small for dates. When I got a copy of a letter the pediatricion sent my G.P after a 3 month check up on dd2 it mentioned she was in SCBU for iugr and low blood sugar. Up until this point I was a happy mum who had a lovely albeit small beautiful baby.
I to googled iugr and read as much as I could on it it has taken me until she reached the age of 2 to believe that she is NT. I constantly looked for problems with her convinced myself she had all kinds of problems that are OCCASIONALLY associated with iugr and suffered depression as a result.
I wish I had never seen that letter and I could have enjoyed her for the beautiful baby she was. Do not google any more ask the DR / pedeatricans they are the experts and will not lie to you. The internet and access to info is a great tool but you often hear /read of the worst case senarios.
Eat well, look after yourself try to avoid smoky atmospheres I am vegatarian and do not eat fish. Some reports I have read have suggested that oily fish is particullary beneficial for smnall babies in the womb, but ask your DR as I do not know what the current advice is for fish and pregnancy.

albatros · 09/12/2006 22:44

Best wishes for Monday, Sorry if I have worried you about IUGR, it might not be an issue with your baby at all, some babies slow down and then catch up again.
The midwife did say it was common and not a problem, try to keep it all in perspective and not focus on the negatives you have read about

achristmasshoop · 11/12/2006 14:05

Hi. Had my 20wk scan today and sonographer said that everything was fine! I know I shouldn't have googled, got in BIG trouble for it off a lot of people
The thing that still worries me is that midwife said it was a chemical picked up in my triple screening, but as I have seen piccies am going to put it to the back of my head and speak to midwife when I see her again in Jan. Hopefully get full details off her and take my mum so that she can take in what I can't. (If she has something to ask, she will speak my mind for me!! )
Am really enjoying feeling the baby move now!

albatrosinapeartree · 11/12/2006 14:28

Great news about the scan. I am glad you posted again as I was really worried for you, after you posted you had read about IUGR on the internet it can make bleak reading and it is probably nothing to do with what the midwife was talking about.
If your baby was small they would have picked it up so don't worry.
My dd's case was extreme and she shows no long term health effects from it.
I Hope you can enjoy the rest of your pregnancy and look forward to your new arrival
