Do you know the blood group for everyone in your family?

So I was watching Grey's Anatomy the other day and a character was being slated for not knowing their child's blood group. It struck me that I have no idea of the blood group of anyone in the family (myself included!). I called the GP surgery to get the information from our notes but apparently they don't have this recorded even though I know they tested mine when I was pregnant and DS1 had a hole in his heart so has a fairly large medical file I would imagine. Confused

So do you know your family's blood groups? (and does anyone know how to find out short of paying for private blood tests?)

I'm O neg as are all 3 of my children. No idea what DH is. I only know mine because of bleeding in early pregnancy and needing multiple anti-d injections, the children were all tested at birth and I never got the postnatal anti-d.

MatildaTheCat · 27/10/2015 12:50

In the UK nobody is screened unless there is a medical reason ie pregnancy. No doctors here would expect a parent to know this and testing for emergency cross matching can be done very quickly. Even if someone knew 100% what their blood group was they would still be tested every time because it is possible to develop antibodies which also need to be taken into account.

No need for private tests. Smile

BertPuttocks · 27/10/2015 12:56

We're both blood donors so found out our blood groups that way.

I'm rhesus negative (dh is rhesus positive) so our children's were tested when they were born.

onedogatoddlerandababy · 27/10/2015 13:09

Yep, like many others due to blood testing in pregnancy - I'm O- and both dds are A+, so I assume that's what DP is as well

Sgtmajormummy · 27/10/2015 13:10

We're all A+.
I'm a blood donor, DH has it on his driving licence (not sure where he found out) and the kids were tested at birth.

thanksamillion · 27/10/2015 13:12

I know my DCs but only because we lived abroad in a country with really awful medical services and I knew I wouldn't be able to trust a test done there. We had to go to a private clinic in London and pay quite a lot to get it done.

dementedpixie · 27/10/2015 13:12

I'm B- and dh is A+, don't know the kids though. We only know ours as we both give blood

HippyChickMama · 27/10/2015 13:15

I'm O neg, I know both dcs are rhesus neg but no idea which group, no idea what dh is either.

Barabajagal · 27/10/2015 13:18

We are all O but two of us (including me) are O- so I found out all the blood groups at birth.

louisejxxx · 27/10/2015 13:19

I know mine from doing A level Human Biology where we did the tests for figuring out what your blood type is and whether your rhesus +ve or -ve.

I also know my parents' and my son's, but not my daughters.

Surely most women who have had children are likely to at least know if they are + or -, if not their blood type too from having blood tests? I got my paperwork back giving me all the info from the tests, including my blood group.

FlysInDreams · 27/10/2015 13:26

I only know I'm A+ as I have given blood (AO as my mum is O and dad is AB, both pos). No idea about my DH or DTDs.

RingDownRingUp · 27/10/2015 13:28

No, I only know mine (A+) because of past surgery.

jaffajiffy · 27/10/2015 13:29

Yes. I knew mine as I used to give blood and they used it for babies in utero. O-. I then had dh tested when I was pg with ds1 and then both DS1 and DS2 were tested at birth.

Utterlyclueless · 27/10/2015 13:31

I know I'm AB because of my notes from pregnancy.

You don't need to know tbh.

Bubbletree4 · 27/10/2015 13:32

I know mine due to pregnancy and blood donation. Dh and kids - no idea!

Bubbletree4 · 27/10/2015 13:33

I think it's more common for everyone to know in the US.

Utterlyclueless · 27/10/2015 13:34

Sorry I should have put the + thought I did though

SockQueen · 27/10/2015 21:31

I'm O+, I know because I'm a blood donor. Mum is B+, Dad is O+. DH doesn't know (can't give blood for medical reasons) and we don't have DC.

It really doesn't matter if you know or not - as a previous poster said, no hospital would ever issue blood for transfusion based on your word alone.

ragged · 27/10/2015 21:36

I think American paediatricians record it as routine so hence the plot line on Greys Anatomy.

I know DH & me, & that DC must all be A or B, but can't say more.

Finallyonboard · 27/10/2015 21:39

I am A positive and my DH is o negative. Not sure about DC.

bigbluebus · 27/10/2015 22:23

I'm B-. I only found this out when I was expecting DD1. I managed to live the first 30 years of my life without knowing!
In spite of DD having had more blood tests than I would care to remember, I have no idea what her blood group is.
Don't think ds has ever had blood taken (apart from possibly at birth) so don't know his either.
DH once went to donate blood and fainted Grin so never went back again and don't suppose he got as far as finding out his blood group.

I don't think it is necessary to know.

hennipenni · 27/10/2015 22:25

I'm AB-, found out as I was a blood donor, DD1 is B+ I think, DD2and3 are rhesus -

Smilelikeyoufeelit · 29/10/2015 16:24

A+ and DH is O- (both blood donors, or at least I was until I had a transfusion) No idea about the children though.

TheFallenMadonna · 29/10/2015 16:28

I am A neg, DH is O neg, so my children will be rh neg, but I don't know their ABO type. A or O?
