Question re blood tests.

I had blood tests done last week to check for thyroid problems, anaemia or maybe a hormone imbalance. I was at doctors today with dd2 and thought I would ask if results were in and was told I need to talk to the doctor tomorrow and receptionist arranged for doc to ring me. My questions are If the doctor needs to speak to me does that mean they have found something wrong? and also would a blood test highlight something else wrong with you or is it only the things they are checking for that they see? I am really worried so I would appreciate any inforrmation as this is the first time i have had to have a blood test as an adult (apart from the usual pregnancy ones and when I give blood). Thanks.

I think it may simply be about confidentiality - the doctor may be the only person who can talk to you about the results, whatever they are.

I wouldn't worry yourself too much - all of those three things you list are able to be dealt with and if the suspicion was that you had one of the three, it could be that you are slightly anaemic for instance, and need iron supplements.

I had anaemia which was picked up on blood tests which were testing me for EVERYTHING possible. I had 3 months of bronchitis which I couldn't throw off, various secondary infections, including bladder etc. I felt like I was dying - and it was simply that my iron levels were low and after 2 wks of iron supplements everything wrong cleared up and all was well again.

My doctor said that MANY women are anaemic, even just slightly can make a big impact and its easily fixed.

Good luck, try not to worry.

I think the receptionist would be able to tell you if they were completely normal - so I would suspect that something isn't quite right. Until you speak to the GP it would be impossible to tell what I am afraid.

Try not to worry, the receptionist shouldn't give out your results but should be able to tell you if they are back

Thanks for that SlightlyMad. The receptionist was her normal charming self and I had the kids messing about around my legs so I did not get to ask her more, although I guess she wouldn't be able to tell me anyway. I'm just a bit worried. I don't suppose anyone knows if anything other than what they are looking for would show up?

Thanks all, crossed posts there, sorry. I know I should not worry but I can't help myself. Thankyou for your replies though.

Some blood tests would show up more than the specific things they are looking for as 1 test is actually a seres of test IYSWIM. I would suspect that the tests that you hae had taken are quite specific though if they are for specific hormones.

What makes you think that it could be 'something else'? Deal with what the GP thinks it could be first.

Try not to worry until you have spoken to GP.

BTW at our surgery our receptionist is allowed to say - 'completely normal' or 'you need to speak to GP'. TBH GP has normally contacted me first if there is a problem.

The receptionist will not be able to interpret the 'numbers' which have come back from the lab. I suspect that the GP has inspected the results and put a comment to say he needs to speak to you. If it was really bad he will have rung you already.

I know you're right. I consider myself told and will try not to worry . I don't think it could be something else particularly, I just wondered if a blood test did pick other things up, thats all. Thanks for the replies though x
