Is my GP hinting at something or am I paranoid?

Had an appt with my GP this morning as I'm having irregular and continual bleeding. I suffer from PCOs so not totally unusual, but nevertheless will have to have bloods etc done. GP insists on STD swabs as well. Now he's done these on several occasions in the past which I've always found slightly unusual as I've been married for 12 years and with my partner for longer than that. So excluding the checks during pg (I've had HIV etc done at each pg), I've probably had to have STD swabs 4 times in the last 10 years. My GP is the doctor for the whole family including dh. I've known him for almost 20 years, and see him more outside the surgery than in (we go to the same church).

So is it standard to keep on being sent to swabs with every gynae issue, or is he hinting at something here?

what swabs has he been taking?? has he told you what he has been looking for? as he could be merely checking for infection that isnt sexually transmitted or even thrush.

I don't know (ie I'm not a doctor) but I would say it's standard. i would say that if they're trying to find out what's wrong with you they'd be pretty wrong not to follow all avenues.

If it helps, I do know how you feel, although it was only a one-off for me. I had bleeding and was tested for everything and it was really horrible.

quite funny really, maybe he's seen loads of people who unexpectedly have an std.Probably thinks you're so hot ,you must have a depraved lifestyle.
Lol that you see him in church.

If I were PSH I WOULD NOT want to think the guy doing my smears thinks I am hot! Yuck! LOL

I think it's standard -- there has been so much negative publicity about cases where someone suffered for years with mysterious gynae issues that turned out to be an undiagnosed STD which could have been cured in a couple of weeks that a good GP will just do the tests as routine now.

IsawLandSmumkissingSantaClaus · 04/12/2006 13:40

Absolutely routine, he knows the chances of anything coming back is very low but its his job to exclude all possible causes. He's your GP when you see him in surgery, thinking differently to the friend you know from church!

OK thanks. If he was a "stranger" then I would have refused the STD tests as being unecessary (and it is a major faff as they have to be done at the GUM clinic which is miles away). But as I do know him I didn't feel that I could refuse as he may know something I don't IYSWIM...

I had heavy irregular periods and my GP suggested I got tested for Chlamydia. Didn't have it, fortunately, or dh would've had some explaining to do!
