Underactive thyroid and non anemic iron deficiency

Any help with this gratefully received Grin

I have had an underactive thyroid for years and have been diagnosed with iron deficency which should be rectified by taking iron supplements

I'm getting myself a bit confused with how to take my tablets

I know to take my thyroxine in the morning and I'm to take the supplements in the am and pm

Iron inhibits Thyroxine and tea, coffee, wine, chocolate and dairy inhibits iron absorption

Is that right? So if i take my thyroxine at 9am, then iron at 11am and then i can have an eggy lunch at 1pm and then take the iron again at 8pm...where do i fit the wine in?

Or am i overthinking this?

The received wisdom is that you should keep iron supplements and thyroxine at least four hours apart. Have you considered taking iron in the morning and at lunch, thyroxine at bedtime and foregoing the wine?

What !!!!!!

Grin only joking I'm not that attached to alcohol

Dr said to take thyroxine in the am...so in that case i need the iron at lunchtime

Do you know how long to leave it between iron and coffee for example?

Thanks

Hi,

I had exactly this a year ago.

I took thyroxine first thing in the morning, then one iron tablet around lunch time (half hour or more before or after lunch - further from thyroxine the better) with a berrocca (specifically sainburies as doesn't have calcium or aspartame- I did my research!) and another iron tablet in the evening with a dispersible vit c tablet (I checked that amount of vit c ok) as taking with vit c helps absorption.

I did try to avoid milky drinks around those times but tbh wasn't always 100% successful, however this method seems to have got my iron levels right up (ferritin) relatively quickly (as far as I could tell compared to other people I've spoken to).

It did take a few months though - about 5 I think - till ferritin was 130 then I stopped!

Hope this helps

Thats great, thanks clarella

I think thats probably what I will try, would be easier to be on one tablet

Going to get some vit c and magnesium as well

A friend recommended actimel in case i get bunged...just have to keep it away from the iron i suppose Grin

I just take my two iron tablets together. It doesn't make a difference.

Clarella · 13/10/2015 18:00

Magnesium can interfere with both too though there is a tad I'm berrocca - didn't seem to be an issue.

Probably more important to be careful with the thyroxine.

I was advised to try splitting dose by pharmacist and I think it was actually on the prescription. Was hard work remembering though. I guess some days do two together if easier? I was desperate to get well!

Thanks katherine, i suppose it shouldn't matter. I could certainly try it although you don't seem to have a problem

Same here clarella i just don't want to keep feeling this way.
