Following several months of infections "down below" after a missed miscarriage in May 06, I now have a laproscopy lined up for 3 weeks time. Has anyone else had experience of this? Am I likely to be spending Christmas in pain or on antibiotics?!

Neither, I had one done on a Thursday and drove as in I was a passenger, to Dover and then on to St Omer on the Friday, and the following day down to Dijon.

But then I have a very high pain/discomfort threshold.

I have a very low pain / discomfort threshold and still agree with Sherlock. I had one a few years ago and was in and out of hospital in about 5 hours, felt a little tired and took these easy for a couple of days but no great pain and no antibiotics.

'things easy'

i had one too, it was fine, my stomach was quite bruised around my navel but it was generally ok

marimoo · 03/12/2006 16:15

Thanks, I am releived to know it won't be that bad. I am just anxious about what they might find...

they found nothing in my case. it was stress related un-explained pelvic pain

I've had 2,one for infertility & another to remove an ectopic pregnancy. The worst bit was the pain from the gas that they use to inflate your abdomen, but that was just like bad wind.

I am sorry about your miscarriage.

I've had three laparoscopies. The third was the worst, but it was the most involved - I was having endometriosis removed, so it was quite "involved".

The first was a diagnostic one and I'm sure the recovery would have been better if they'd bothered giving me any painkillers before I came round

It won't be comfy, but it won't be excrutiating either. Just don't expect it to be pain-free (I also have a v high pain threshold - have had two drug-free labours). They'll give you painkillers though - don't fret!

I've had 2 - the first done in a private hospital was horrendous. Nobody warned me about the gas they use getting trapped and causing awful pain. I don't mean to scare you but I couldn't get out of bed for 6 days, was screaming in pain, hubby back and forth to the out of hours docotr for stronger meds. Nobody ever told me what it was and I was convinced I must be bleeding internally and dieing the pain was so bad. I'd had a section the year before which had been no problem, running up and down the stairs 3 days later, hoovering, walking into town pushing buggy. So I know its not my pain threshold.

The 2nd time round it was fine. I drank peppermint tea and took capsules as they help with the trapped gas. Don't know if it was the peppermint, or if I would have been ok anyway but I was fine.

Thanks for your replies. I would rather go into this with my eyes open! I have my works Christmas dinner the night before the laparoscopy. What's the concensus on having a glass of wine or two with the meal? Or is this a no no with anaesthetic due the following morning?

Would not drink any alcohol prior to this operation.

marimoo · 20/12/2006 11:07

Thanks. The op is tomorrow & I am getting v nervous now. I have decided I will steer clear of the alcohol this eve, it just ain't worth it.
