DS woke up this morning with his bum, legs, feet and hands covered in spots. Took him to out of hours docs and they diagnosed chickenpox. He's 15 months. They said it's gonig to get worse before it gets better so I want to prepare myself - any tips or advice? They said no baby groups or going out for TEN DAYS!!! Yikes!

Calamine cream not lotion. Less messy.

my dd 2.6 has it too. she came out with one or two spots on tues and only today have the hundreds of them started to dry up.. its when they are blisters that it is worse. today she is feeling herself again, so thats day 6. nightmare to get calamine lotion on her actually. you ds should be easier being younger. i ended up putting the lotion in a spray bottle and squirting it on, that way i didnt need to actually touch her, which was very painful. piriton syrup, definitely. i didnt bath her at all, although also heard about the bicarb from my aunt, but wondered if that was they did 'in the olden days' ! (she is 60 ish). thought that if the scabs went soft and came off she would scar, but i've no idea on that one tbh.

good luck, i just hope he sleeps. dd has had me awake for 2 whole nights with pockets of 30 mins sleep here and there.

JUST been through this with DS

-cut his nails as short as possible
-calamine cream: just rub it gently ALL OVER
-aveeno oil in the bath
-paracetamol and/or ibuprofen if he gets feverish
-lots of videos and dvds for a few days

DS came out in spots on Monday. Wednesday-Thursday were the worst (feverish, itchy, miserable). By Friday he had no new spots and the old ones were scabbing over. By Sunday he was himself again and today (Monday) back at nursery.

My DD was about 15 months when she had it and wasn't too bothered. Also, I don't want to scare anyone but my friend's DD just had it as well and developed a secondary infection and ended up in hospital. It's VERY rare and she's going to be fine but watch out for a high fever that won't go down with ibuprofen and any areas that seem especially red, hot or swollen (as opposed to just covered in spots!). Good luck. Hopefully won't be too bad.

OH, and I didn't find Piriton helped much.
