If azathioprine affects liver function so has to be stopped what treatment options are next?

I read a blog recently about a woman who is treating UC with a specially modified paleo diet, she's stopped all medication and basically saved her colon from being removed. You can find her on this link

Lily standard treatments range from sulphasalazine type drugs through to steroids then azathioprine and mercaptopurine. If these don't work then often the biologics such as infliximab, humira and methotrexate are used.

My DP hasn't had a flare up since taking his mesalamine (Asacol) regularly (previously he hadn't been convinced that it was effective so had been a bit slap-dash with taking them Confused !)

But he's also stopped eating gluten during that time. Whether both in conjunction or either of these has had a bigger effect it's difficult to know, but he has had the longest period of remission so far, but I would say that diet is definitely worth considering.

It sounds bonkers but if you used to be a smoker, consider starting again - my dad is entirely meds-free since smoking a pipe once every other day and he was at the point of going into hospital with it in the first few years.

E-cigs dont have the same effect (seems its something more than just the nicotene but they dont know what), and if you have never been a smoker then the effect is greatly reduced, again no idea why.

I would be lying if I said my medication had me A1 but Mezavant XL has been the best for me

Lilybensmum1 · 13/10/2015 16:35

Thanks everyone, is mezavant a 5asa never heard of it. Truth be told bit unsure about starting immune drugs as sorry if tmi but using toilet about 3 times a day, never at night no blood, pain etc. Currently taking pentasa and steroids. But sigmoidoscopy shows active inflammation. Honestly have not felt this well in ages.

Pentasa and Mezavant XL both have the same active ingredient - Mesalazine. I was allergic to the Pentasa coating so went onto the Mezavant instead.
