I am a first time parent and just going through the NHS vaccination programme with my baby. He had his first two lots of jabs without any issues at all – no fever and only a little bit of moodiness the following day. He is now also in the Meningitis B catch-up cohort and his third lot of jabs (DTaP/IPV/Hip and PCV boosters) would have also included the first Meningitis B vaccination. As I didn’t want him to have three needle pricks in one session, I booked the MenB jab for a week later. When we saw the nurse last Monday for the DTaP/IPV/Hip and PCV boosters, she had already prepped all three the jabs. I clarified that we would be back for the MenB in a week and she put one syringe aside and proceeded with the other two. That evening my son went to sleep normally but woke up screaming (this was around four hours after the vaccinations and highly unusual for him). He also developed a fever (38.8C) during the night and was unwell for the next day. Paranoid as I am I can’t help but wonder if there is any chance the nurse put the wrong jab aside by mistake and he was administered the Meningitis B vaccine. The only reason I am worried is because I understand that most babies develop a fever after the MenB vaccine and I did not expected him to have a reaction to the boosters. Does anyone know if it is normal to have a reaction to the boosters rather than the initial vaccinations? Perhaps this is to be expected as the immune system reacts quickly having started to produce antibodies? How bad would a second MenB jab be after one week? Any thoughts?
