HI knowledgable thyroid people - how do I balance dose of t3 and t4?

I was on 125 mcg of t4 and have been taking 75 mcg t4 and 15 of t3. Felling better mood wise and energy wise but still a bit foggy headed. Do I up the t3, t4, reduce it, change the balance? Help!! I need a systematic way of doing it.

If you’re self-treating, it’s very much ‘suck it and see’ I’m afraid. In that situation I would be inclined to raise the T3 by 5mcg and see what happened. If you are under the care of a doctor, go back and ask the question.

Would you like to give us some background?

Thanks Pleasemrstweedie.

I have had an under active thyroid since 2005 and have had to adjust my levo lots of times over the years. I seem really sensitive to it and for the first few years had trouble raising it high enough to suppress TSH. Low ferritin and Iron could have had something to do with it. Suffered from periodic shakiness and what feels like low blood sugar. Low mood too.

Anyway, recently have felt tired and foggy and doing a lot of running. Had been on antidepressants too in the last two years and fed up with it and stopped as I the the side effects and blunting of mood, and increased appetite etc. Not going back to them!!

Struggling with anxiety. On 125 ug of levo and have been for quite a while now. TSH 0.1 so dr says am slightly over replaced.

After doing some googling and getting a T4 result in mid range and a check of t3 showed low but just in range I persuaded him to let me try some T3 as my find is on a mix of levo and t3 and feels great.

As I said, feeling better but not sure how to balance it for optimum results. it's really important to have a clear head because I have a job that requires hard thinking and am sick of the fog!! Due back at docs in 3 weeks.

Thanks for filling in the background. We are all individuals, which means really it will be trial and error. Once you get on anything with T3 in it, testing becomes a bit pointless and you should be able to dose by symptoms. However, your GP will want to see your FT3 in range.

How is your iron now? You also need good levels of B12, folate and vitamin D if you are to get the best from your thyroid meds and if your thyroid disease is auto immune you also need to be gluten free.

Lots of advice and support on the ThyroudUK forum on www.healthunlocked.com.

Thanks for the links.
I will carry on doing a bit of diy finding own level based on how I feel. Am sugar free but will try cutting out wheat and other glutinous stuff. As it happens wheat makes me feel horrible.
