Hi my 13 year old dd has been prescribed lymecycline hard 408 mg for her mild acne. Read the leaflet and worried about the side effects. Discolouration of teeth possible and risk of sight loss!!! That was listed in the rare but possible bit. Has anyone been prescripedthis? Is it effective? Is it worth the risk?! Thanks

I've had it. No side effects apart from a bit of indigestion (and I always get that or worse with antibiotics). It was very effective if that helps!

Thank you. Reassures a bit. Bless her, her skin isn't that bad at all. Just feeling something topical might be better. Can't understand the warning of sight loss!

I've had it and my skin wasn't that bad either - mild rosacea. I found the tablets ok for the first two weeks (8 week course) and after that had severe stomach cramps so stopped.

Cetaphil and hot cloth cleansers with eucerin moisturiser made my skin better along with some topical rosacea treatments but I'm sure some are similar to acne treatments. Was your dd given any topical treatment at all?

My son has used it for a year and its been fine. All drugs have side effects if you read the leaflets.

Alcohol can give me a headache, but it doesn't stop me drinking it!

I think it is prescribed quite commonly.

Alcohol can give me a headache, but it doesn't stop me drinking it! yeah that's not a medicine, and it wasn't prescribed to you.

If she hasn't been given any topical treatments I would consider going back and asking to try some first, but that is only what I would do. Antibiotics can be strong and they can have side effects which is why they should be a last resort not a first port of call.

I was on it and it was great.

Jinglebells99 · 08/10/2015 22:26

Yes she hasn't tried any topical treatments. I think I'd rather she tried something with less side effects. The dr suggested a form of contraception too but didn't really want her taking that yet either!

This is the thing that annoys me about gps, straight for the drugs! Sorry I know this is all a bit me me me but I was put on the contraceptive pill at 14 due to heavy painful periods and given a laparoscopy too - the pill (microgynon) gave me crazy mood swings so much so I changed overnight. I'm sure synthetic hormones during puberty are no good!! I've also had issues with scar tissue from where the laparoscopy was.

I think your gut instinct is right, if all else fails the tablets are still there to try - particularly the antibiotics luckily in this country it's not now or never.

I hope she's ok.

Thanks Strawberrytallcake. I think I'll call tomorrow and see if they can prescribe something else.
