Gestationa diabetes!

Hi all! I had gestational diabetes with my first, was on metformin and induced at 38 weeks last December. Currently I am 27+ weeks pregnant with my second and have just found out I have it again... The guidelines have changed, and they only induce if baby is showing big on any growth scans... Just curious if anyone else is in the same situation? I'm very nervous about going late or having a big baby! And also any diet tips you'd like to share?

I'm very newly pregnant (5weeks) but had what should have been a pre-conception appointment with diabetic clinic today. They are pretty sure I will have it again (had GD in first pregnancy too) so I'm really watching my diet. Spoke to dietician who said smaller portions more often help to avoid a sugar 'spike' also try not to over carb in one meal. She did say everyone was different though! For me pizza and curry cause huge spikes. Belvita breakfast biscuits are really good - very slow release if you get the plain ones.
Wasn't aware induction guidance had change but as I say it's really early for me!

Thank you for your reply strawberry! I only found out today that the induction guidelines had changed. I have been very careful on what I've been eating so far in this pregnancy, but I clearly have been doing something wrong! I remember last pregnancy pizza sent my sugar levels sky high, so haven't had it at all this pregnancy! Were you induced last time?

Thanks :) yes I was induced at 38 weeks too. I don't think you've done anything wrong I think if GD is going to happen it will we can just try and keep it under control with a good diet! Hope everything goes well for you.

With regard to Vitamin D and gestational diabetes.

It has been shown, quite convincingly, that your vitamin D status has a significant effect upon the likelyhood of developing GD. Also pre-eclampsia, pre-term birth, need for ceasarian section , bacterial vaginitis etc. ( see the work of Profs. Hollis and Wagner. Medical University of S. Carolina.)

Many people in this country are low in Vit D. it would be a really good idea to get your Vit D level checked, and raise it , by sun, food, supplements if you have GD and you Vitamin D level is low.

Please have a good read over here : www.mumsnet.com/Talk/general_health/2421492-Vitimin-D-can-it-have-this-effect

where we are discussing levels, effects and reasons for such effects.

Have a look at the vitamindassociation.org , there is a talk there on the front page by Professor Hollis , also lots of information concerning Vit D and pregnancy.

Hope this is helpful.

Thank you better! That's really interesting! And thank you strawberry, it's a little reassuring to hear from both of you that this may not have been my fault... Will definitely look into the vit D thing! I'd never heard that before! Did you have a big baby last time strawberry?

I did - he was 9lb and I'm relatively small. He was very fat and lost it all quite quickly, he's naturally a skinny little thing!

I had a little 5lb 13oz baby last time... Worried that he was only small because I was on metformin and that if I manage this one with diet (which I very much hope to do) then I will have a big baby. Silly worries hehe. I'm sure I would cope!
