HI just wondered if anyone else has experience of this?
My little boy fell and broke 2 toes! The doctors were really funny about it as they said it was very rare to do this. Upsetting. But they have just put a soft bandage on it. I'd appreciate any advice- i was so upset by their questions that i forgot to ask obvious things like- how long will it take to heal etc...

Not sure if this helps - but my dh broke a toe a few years ago and was basically told it would heal in a few weeks and he should put his feet up while it was painful to walk but try to use it as soon as he could. He went skiing (ie. pushing foot into hard, tight boot) 6 weeks later...

So in terms of a little one, my guess would be to give pain relief if he seems to need it, and not to push him to walk etc - he'll want to try, so he will just as soon as he's ready. He's probably in a better position than an adult to decide when he's able to use it again.

But I'm not a doctor.

my DS2 broke a bone in his foot (same one as Beckham apparently) - he was 2.6. He had it in a tubigrip for 3 weeks and I had to push/carry him around a lot. He couldn't wear his shoes -only slippers or wellies.

(i'm not a doctor or nurse either though )

Not very rare at all, quite common! Doesn't need a plaster. Dd broke her 5th metatarsal last Christmas, and was walking again in about 4 days. She was 4 at the time; at 2 he'll probably be up and about again in a couple of days. If he's able to walk on it, he will be fine- don't stop him!

my then 5mo broke his arm and we had lots of questions which were obviously trying to find out whether he'd been abused. Having said that when they realised I wasn't lying they were as nice as could be. They said small children have something in their bones (forgotten the name) which makes their bones grow extra fast. His break would have started to set in a week and be invisible in 6 weeks. He was crawling again within about 4 days.

I (and I'm sure you when you reflect) is that I'd rather put up with some awkward questions myself if it helps them pick up the few children who really have been hurt by someone
