Spotting

Hi, I'm 43 and usually have regular periods. I'm mid cycle now and have had a bit of spotting. This has never happened before to me. I'm not on any hormone contraceptives. I have health anxiety stemming back to the death of my mum 12 years ago to cancer, so this is scaring me. I've booked in for a smear test in couple of weeks. Could it be menopause related?

Hi there. I had mid cycle spotting for the first time at about your age. It happened for a few days every month after that. I went to the gp after 4 episodes who dismissed it as one of those things. Then I had my normal annual blood tests I was diagnosed as severely anaemic. My periods had become very heavy and prolonged and my gp sent me to a gynaecologist who eventually diagnosed a uterine fibroid.

Anyway, I would definitely recommend a visit to your gp and the smear test is a good idea. If the gp doesn't refer you, and it persists month to month, go to see the gp again. I too have health anxiety and I tortured myself for too long googling and checking, reassuring and worrying myself in turns. What I did find out is that spotting is very unlikely to be sinister but should be investigated. I also asked the practice nurse who did my smear about it and she reassured me.

Tobee, are you able to advise on my thread "bleeding at end of pill pack"? I also have fibroids which caused similar issues and I also have health anxiety!!

Thank you Smile
