Anyone had a Mirena coil fitted with a retroverted and/or bicornuate uterus? Was it OK?

Getting a bit nervous about Mirena fitting. I've had difficulties with smear tests and internals as womb is quite far back. Not awful though, just a bit fiddly. Recent scan shows I also have a bicornuate uterus (heart shape) so a scan afterwards would be helpful to see that the positioning is OK.

Not sure I want to go ahead now!

I have a retroverted uterus and didn't have any issues having it fitted - it was a bit sore afterwards, much like a bad period pain.

That said, I was one of the 10% of people that suffered side effects including my hair falling out, insomnia and depression - to the point where i found myself googling how to remove it at home at 3am one morning (I did actually take it out myself as my GP refused to do it - she wanted to wait for 6 months to see if the symptoms settled down).

My sister has had them for 15 years and thinks they are amazing - no idea what shape her uterus is though Grin.

My advice would be to try it cause they're brilliant for the people that they work well for. But watch out for side effects and make sure you stand up for yourself if you're not happy.

Retroverted uterus and a rectocoele in the way that made it very difficult for the poor GP to fit (it's like painting your hallway through the letterbox!). It was uncomfortable but not painful, and afterwards it just felt like period pain. Absolutely nothing compared to say having a baby or a broken bone!

How awful that your GP wouldn't remove it RNBrie. And no, people don't tend to discuss the shape of their uterus much!

Grizzle I don't know whether to laugh or be mortified at the hall decorating scenario. Grin
I'm predicting a lot of prolonged poking around, sitting on my hands etc. I guess if its not painful I'll survive.

Retroverted uterus was no problem in fitting - I did tell them though so they were prepared and confirmed it was well flipped back...
Having it in was a completely different problem and like RNBrie I removed it myself because of unacceptable side effects and five months of solid spotting.

I had a tricky attempt at insertion as I have a retroverted uterus so I eventually had it done under ga by a gynaecologist . I also up have fibroids ( symptoms have really improved sine I've had it)

MajesticWhine · 01/10/2015 21:20

Retroverted uterus here. I have had two coils fitted, mirena and copper. Both times it failed on the first go, and I was sent to a consultant to have it done. It was all a bit fiddly, but not horrific, and worth it I think.

TheImminentGin · 01/10/2015 21:24

Retroverted here too though undiagnosed until they scanned for fibroids. That was after I'd had a copper coil inserted. No problems other than the normal lots of initial spotting and some heavy bleeding due to the fibroids.
I'd recommend copper coil.

RNBrie · 01/10/2015 22:17

The copper coil made my periods more painful and heavy which is why I tried the Mirena. But I'd take the copper over the Mirena any day now.

Dragonratt people are usually horrified when I tell them I removed my own coil, so it's nice to know I'm alone!!!

Retroverted here too, am on third mirena over a period of 12 and a bit years and have never had a problem - either with having them fitted/replaced, or with living with them.
Little bit of pain, like a bad period pain for a day or so after fitting/replacing, but then that's it. I know some people don't get on with them at all, but personally I think they're just great!

RNBrie · 01/10/2015 22:30

*I'm not alone. Sigh. No idea what's wrong with my posts tonight! So many typos, time for bed!!

Dragonratt · 02/10/2015 09:09

RNBrie Likewise Smile. Seemed the sensible thing to do at the time.

retroverted uterus here too and I've had two coils fitted - mirena and the copper one. Mirena didn't hurt but I felt a bit faint afterwards for about ten mins but was revived with fish and chips and strong tea.
Copper coil was trickier as uterus went into spasm which was rather uncomfortable; had to lie there for a while with some lucozade.

Had mirena removed after 8 months due to non stop bleeding and the copper coil 2.5 years but each removal was easy and over in a jiffy

RJnomaaaaaargh · 02/10/2015 09:20

I don't think there's a problem with a retro erred uterus bar difficulty fitting but I have a mullerian anomaly too and use of mirena is definitely contraindicated if you have a bicornate uterus.

RJnomaaaaaargh · 02/10/2015 09:21

I'd suggest you need to talk to a consultant with understanding of mullerian anomalies and not your gp tbh.
