Private Endocrinologist for Pregnancy

Hi Mumsnet, I am new to the site.

Me and my husband want to start trying for a baby. I have a high level of hypothyroidism, though, which I have been told it is pretty problematic when it comes to fertility and pregnancy and needs to be strictly controlled. I have a great doctor in Spain, but my English GP from the NHS is completely unconcerned, and having a doctor abroad is not sustainable.

I'd like to find a private endocrinologist specialised in pregnancies in London whom I could consult with and who could give me regular controls and check ups if and when I get pregnant.

Can anyone recommend one? I know most private health insurance companies do not cover chronic diseases like this, which I find ridiculous, but we are willing to foot the bills just to set our minds at ease.

Many thanks
Lorena

Don't know about UK anymore but I am a private pregnant patient in Ireland and still have to go to the public diabetes clinic as there is no private endocrinologist at the maternity hospital.
I have found the care related to my diabetes to have been very good when pregnant. Both through NHS in UK and public care in Ireland. So you might find things are better when you are actually pregnant.

What do you mean by a high level of hypothyroidism? Have you had your levels checked recently? It's important to know what your actual numbers are. Your TSH should be below 2.5, ideally 2 and your T4 in the upper range. Are you on thyroxine?

Hi Jeffreythegiraffe

Yes, I've been taking 150 grams of levothyroxine each day for the last decade.

My TSH is at 2.50, my T4 at 0.98 (this was last time I had a blood test done in Spain, last July).
I am being controlled every six moths, give or take, but via a doctor in Spain, I just want to find a good private endocrinologist here in London, as pregnancy could complicate matters.

It only complicates things if your thyroid isn't being treated correctly. Your thyroxine should be increased and you should have bloods taken every trimester.

Centre for endocrinology at The London Clinic. Harley street. Prof G M Besser. Good luck.
